I also work from the US for an Israeli start up. The culture can be abrasive and it's hard to be in the know and to have impact if you're not located in headquarters. Not sure about the culture being toxic but you certainly do have a bit more risk in this decision in my opinion.
Im Israeli, born there and all my family is Israeli. I'm much more US than the rest of them. What may come across as harsh to a non Israeli is just natural dialogue. Are they US or overseas? Israelis are very direct which i find non israelis perceive as curt. Once I was in a car with 3 Israeli and an English speaking friend driving from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. When we arrived, my friend whispered to me " What were they fighting about?" They were not fighting, they were talking about the stores is the Holy City. Tremendous work ethic, driven to succeed and transparent, my neice, Israeli, left a tech startup in Israel because of the pressure and hours. Trying not to stereotype, ask yourself how hard do you want to work and what will you get out of it. Ask yourself if you are adaptable and have a flexible work style. Israeli tend to always be teaching, ask yourself if you appreciate being taught vs thinking you ate being condescending to.
Thank you so much for this insight. This is exactly my concern. I am no shrinking violet, but the truth is, I am not comfortable with conflict. And while I truly value directness and authenticity, screamers or people who are quick to anger make me very uncomfortable. I have heard this is sort of the norm (and even benign) in Israeli culture. I think I will likely pass on this one (assuming they are even interested, which I doubt.) thanks so much
