I’m interviewing for in-house and firm roles and I’m not sure how to navigate the compensation issue. See what they offer you and ask yourself if it’s enough to live on. Different companies and law firms have different compensation policies. You’ll most likely be offered more money at the law firm but it’s a different way of life. Regardless of the offer, if you’re coming from a government job you’re most likely going to get a significant raise over what you’re making now. In my experience employers generally don’t negotiate compensation aggressively. They have their company guidelines and they work within them. You simply need to determine if you can live on what they’re willing to pay you. If you get the job and it works out, your good performance will lay the groundwork for a salary negotiation, if appropriate, when you’re up for a raise. Don’t leave them with a bad taste about you. If you’re too aggressive, they might not offer you the job. When the offer comes in, ask your lawyer friends. If you ask enough people you’ll get a good sense of what you can expect from them. Somewhere in the range of opinions is the magic number. First, rob the train. Then you can split up the loot.

Hi, would love some advice! I’ve been at my company ~1 yr and feeling like I need a change due to various reasons. Not sure if I can apply elsewhere w/ a little less than 1 yr under my belt, and I don’t have many connections in my area. Right now, I play a BSA role on my team, and I’m hoping to pursue product/UX design. I’m also doing a UX bootcamp in the spring & working on a udemy course outside of work for UX/UI. What’s a good stepping stone role (remote preferred)?
