I’m going to guess you’re doing this because of financial reasons. Unfortunately, no matter what you do, it won’t be taken well. I’d recommend finding an alternative route. Unless you specifically let folks know what your issue is, it’s going to be hard getting help. Few options below....
- ask your consulting firm if you can start earlier
- borrow some money if this is financial related (friends, family, credit card, personal loan)
- if this is immigration related, inform your consulting firm and ask for advice. A big consulting firm usually will do whatever they can to help employees
I thank you P1 for at least staying on point instead of discussing the ethics where I know I’m in the wrong anyway
I agree w others saying this isn’t the best idea but also heard you above saying you didn’t want advice if you should do it, but how to do it. My advice is to be as kind as possible, be apologetic and say you really didn’t want to do this but couldn’t turn the other offer down, and just accept that it won’t be received well. If you’re going through w it, just do it, be kind and don’t waste your time sweating how people who you will never work with again or see again will perceive you.
When I was in the industry, a soon to be consultant did the same to me - quit within a month of mining my team. He made his lack of trustworthiness very very clear. Mine was a smaller industry, and I decided I was going to be vindictive. His firm didn’t really get much traction with us after - and I made it clear that he was the reason.
What you’re doing is unprofessional, unethical and it’s hard to exit without bribing bridges. People aren’t stupid, friend.
I'm with D6. It's business not personal. Don't fall for that double standard. Deloitte leadership will fire you because you are not a favorite or even if you have better client relationships...very personal and subjective reasons. The promotions and bonuses are often based primarily on favoritism. Now you definitely should stay for longer than two weeks especially if they are nice folks but the great resignation is happening and companies are just going to have to get used to people seeing themselves as commodities who can come and go to their preference just as managers and companies hire, fire, promote employees as commodities to their own preferences.
You don’t. I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but when you do this know full well that the bridge to company A will be burnt to a crisp.
You won't burn bridges unless you literally take a dump on their floor. Just stay cordial and let them know you're leaving as this wasn't what you expected
If you don’t see a future there, don’t join. One month is too short. Don’t do it
Why would you join company a at all?
Agree with D3, context is everything in this situation and to think that you’d want to get advice on developing an approach is asinine
If you leave a month in, you’re going to burn bridges. I’d blackball you from my firm if you pulled that on me.
If you really need the money just Uber for a month, don’t waste your time or their time
Ha....whoever you are....that employer will take a long hard look at your profile and it will become a RED FLAG for future hires. essentially....burning multiple bridges with one stone.
A2 you are missing the point. I’m not looking for an answer to “should I do it?”
I’m looking for an answer to “how should I do it”
If you have an answer to that, please let me know. If not, I’m not interested in discussing ethics
Why on earth don’t you just extended your final day at current company. Then skip company A altogether.
I begged them to keep me on payroll and not pay me the severance but just keep me on bench for half the time. They said “No”. I said I’ll give up all access to the laptop and all material but it would help me to just be laid off a bit later and I will give up the severance that they offered saving them more money but they did not help
