I’m leading a research project and the people are not taking initiative and are blowing past deadlines. Any advice on how to motivate them? I’m trying not to become a micromanager, but it’s so tempting. I’ve tried discussing the problem, but all I get are blank faces and excuses

What are your projects like? Do your coworkers understand the big picture and how their subtask fits into the big picture?Have you tried to break up the project into a bunch of smaller steps with 1-2 day horizons and checking in with them at that interval?

I think Intel’s approach is going to be popular only with literal teenagers. IMO, most people would find it infantilizing at best.

What works best with the new generation is micropayment rewards. Get every member a basic prepaid debit visa, and define a system of rewards for taking imitative and getting work done early. It doesn't have to be much- $10 will buy lunch for somebody who gets work in a week before the deadline, $2 thank you for taking initiative on a concern that moves the research forward.

Sticking with the job description and the basic salary will get you no more effort than the basic salary offered with the job description. Reward the behavior you want to see, and you'll see more of that behavior.

I would say a project management platform may be useful for you and your team. Without the context as to what types of issues you are having, I find that often times I can use a dashboard style set up to visualize the progress the team is making and check in when it doesn’t look on track. So many people will not reach out for fear of backlash if they are not on track, even if you aren’t the type of leader who does that. This can help you know which of the team members needs more support.

Got another offer similar to previous one. Location is my hometown. Profile is good.

If I resigned, I will lose the retention bonus & won’t be getting paid for the next 3 months + festive season is starting.

I have an offer to do some consulting for a company based out of the UK (I am in the US). The job would not go through a consulting company but would be directly with the company. I have not done any consulting before so I am not sure how it works, what I would need to set up (they mentioned that I would start a LLC and bill them directly, no idea how to do that), how to determine the tax implications of this, or what hourly rate I would expect. Can anyone offer advice?
