I’m looking at lateral offers from Gunderson and Goodwin (both east coast). I want to focus on VC/EC clients. I know both are well known in the area, but which is better? I know Gunderson is known for more early stage work, but is there a benefit to being at a full service firm like Goodwin when I know that what I’m looking for will be at Gunderson?

Absolutely Gunderson. Some great people there.

Everything you hear about Goodwin’s culture and environment is true. Avoid like the coronavirus

I would think that Goodwin would offer everything Gunderson does plus more. Just a guess.

There is crossover between PE and Tech for the Tech M&A people. Not so much with the Tech ECVC people.

Gunderson

like

As someone who does ECVC both are strong in ECVC. Would probably focus on which team/culture you align with more rather than trying to split hairs on something like “which is better.”

like

I’m at Goodwin in the Tech group. Lateraled this year. Like it a lot more than my old firm. Much better culture. The Tech/Life Sciences group at Goodwin has people doing cap markets, M&A, vc/ec, IP, and tech transactions. Most people have a major and a minor skill set.

like

If you are in the PE group, you will be doing PE work. But there is much more growth equity/VC work in the PE group than at other firms. If you are in the PE group as a senior associate, you would very likely not be doing company counseling for startups though so no EC but a little VC/growth equity. Some Tech associates who do M&A do some PE deals, but the majority of Tech associates do no PE work. You aren’t forced to do anything.

Ok, I’m preaching to the choir here, but I’m a mid-level lateral, and I get most of my work now from an absolutely toxic partner that I am basically assigned to (firm is very siloed and partner doesn’t like sharing associates). I am getting to the point where I don’t take the tirades personally, but the obvious lack of good leadership leaves me incredibly unmotivated. But the learned helplessness also means that I procrastinate—like right now! Send help!

I’ve gotten asked how I deal with feedback in two different interviews recently. Anyone have an idea of what a good answer would be? Work to Billable Ratio First-year: interesting observation after about three months of work, I bill about 2/3 of my “working time.” I’ve compared my productive days because I’ve had some pretty intense outliers recently. On days where I bill 8+, the work to bill ratio is exactly about 66%. Work 12, bill 8. Work 18, bill 12. Have you noticed any interesting trends about your billables like this?

Highly Important Question: Puppies. I’ve been working at a smaller firm for the past 2 years and will be starting at a bigger firm (about 400 attorneys) in about a month or so. New firm is about 10 mins. from my house and has a billable requirement of at least 1,650. I’ve got an older pup and have been considering getting a younger pup to be his little brother for a while. Anyone know of big law firms in Dallas where you can be M&A, make market/bonus by billing in the 1900-2000 hour range every year and not get fired. To early to decide if I want to shoot for partner or go in house. At this point, just don’t want to bill 2000-2400 hours a year to get a garbage bonus (5%). Double points if the culture isn’t god-awful. Does such a place exist?
