Ironically, I received an offer today. The process included a dozen items for review and electronic signature. Then they sent me an application to print out, complete in writing, scan, and email back. For the position I’d just received an offer in writing and accepted via e-sign. What. The. Fuck. This is the human resource onboarding at a major Fortune 500 company. It’s like 1998 writing out my info on this form (copying directly from my resume and references), which were uploaded to their applicant tracking system when I originally applied three months ago. I’m 100% confident no one will ever look at this form but it’s absolutely mandatory (what are they going to do, hard key the info into a separate system for employees versus applicants?).
Shockingly I’ve found this type of bullshit to be common. Buckle up and set your expectations accordingly.
Side note: there is a fucking ton of potential in human resource consulting.
Wait until you begin the interview process (provided you ever hear from them to begin with).
Wait, I'd really love to know the argument for them. Because there were several positions I felt more than qualified for that I refused to apply for because the process involved all manner of unique logins, essays, and lengthy cover letters.
Me too cw1. Not to say that most of the sites are third party and scam the hell out of you.
so true
You can go to industry events and try to meet people at the agencies you're interested in. Then if you ask nicely about an open role maybe they can plop the resume you lovingly made in Illustrator on the right desk vs sending it in to be dissected by a bot. But, that may also be more work than you're willing to put forth. 🤔
I won't lie though - the above method has ended a few times like @DD1 with me getting through the whole interview process and at the very end, right before we talk salary, I've been asked to complete the online form as a formality. I think the moral is, if you would like to have a job in 2018, you will likely have to fight with a computer. Godspeed avoiding it, OP.
Copywriter 1 - maybe I’m wrong, but I assume companies/ HR departments feel like a 20 min job application is effective in weeding people out. And if I was on their side, I may agree.
Still though. So many of those forms are so clunky and unintuitive. I think the weeding out is a two way street.
DOD - no joke I’ve wanted to abandon producing at times and just show these companies how to run an efficient and respectful interview process. This shit isn’t that hard yet so many agencies do it poorly.
Skip them. Generally a waste of time. Seem to just slip into the ether with no response. For best results, I’d recommend finding people you know at the place and/or the Talent person, and reach out to them directly, either via email or LinkedIn.
