Hello, All! I'm looking for recommendations on inspirational content for women leaders. I follow TEDWomen, many podcasts, and the Women's Conference among other sources. I'd love to hear a fresh perspective on business, trends, tech, marketing, equality in the workforce, etc. I'd love to learn something new. I'm at the VP level and have started a couple of companies, so nothing too junior, but open to many topics. Please share any speakers, books, webinars, or events that you may come across.

I am beyond stuck in my first 1.5 years of my career.

I was over promised opportunities at my first gig and then Covid hit. Leading me to have no portfolio worthy pieces from this 💩 agency with nothing great in sight. (place hasn’t won a pitch in my entire time here + lost clients)

I’m juggling re-vamping my site and a side project to hopefully make my book more robust.

With no kind of leadership or mentor, I’m just figuring out how to dig myself out of this hole. Any advice for this chump?

Also, any tips or books to read to help manage such a pace and diversity of projects. Not looking to be a PM. Role is more around managing FTE and contractors across different groups without actually having them reporting to you. TIA

Hello fishes,

I am bored being an HR! Tech and coding fascinate me, and I am considering switching my career to IT after being an HR for quite some time. I would love for you to recommend the next course of action/next steps. What courses do you recommend to a beginner like me, I would appreciate it if any of you could provide an action plan to get into IT mainstream. I am serious about this and have a vision to see myself in the role in the next 2-3 years. I know nothing is impossible. Thx.

Looking to switch up my role to be more focused on the SEO side of things. My strengths have grown into optimizing web pages, and I like it better than all the “fluff” of the rest of the burden I have now.

Does anyone know any companies hiring? What job title should I look for when searching? They seem ALL over the place. I want to avoid working for startups or small businesses… I’ve done my time 😅

So I changed jobs and that got me kicked out of all my bowls. Just got back in and approved all the member requests. Sorry about the delay.

1: So I applied to a Y Combinator-backed startup that just closed a $3m seed round and is hiring a CMO. 5 people work there. The job description put an emphasis on finding an out-of-the-box thinker with an eye for design. So after the first round was scheduled, I sent a cover letter style email to my interviewer the day before. He responded in the interview at the beginning by saying: (continued in comments)

So we're getting a half-dozen manager-level requests daily, but eligible senior marketing leaders are coming in slower. I am approving on average one director-level (or higher) marketer per day.

Feel free to share this bowl to other bowls to help us build our community here!

I want to welcome the 28 new members that were admitted to the bowl today. Five were turned away for not being in senior roles. If I can't tell if you meet the membership criteria, I do look you up on LinkedIn, and I'm glad I do: there were a couple consultants with prior senior executive roles and long careers that I would have missed otherwise.

Anyway, the bowl has now doubled in size. We now have very senior members from global ad agencies, global media agencies, and global brands. Welcome!

So I took a job beginning of November at a seed-stage startup, and my boss (the founder and CEO) is a managerial dumpster fire. Very toxic. As a result, I'm looking for a new job.

I've crafted a couple different responses in the comments to "Why are you looking for a new job after so short a stint?" and would like to get the bowl's advice on which you think is best to use as my primary answer.

Who is the most challenging direct report you've ever had? I had an interface designer once who ranged from condescending on most days to nakedly passive aggressive when he didn't approve of my art direction. We were on a deadline prior to a brand launch so I could neither fire him nor set him straight and risk him quitting, so I just took his shit without protest for six weeks until launch. He was project-based so I didn't have to suffer him further. It was a challenging six weeks.

Manager-level marketers continue to be optimistic about their chances of getting into this group, and I continue to dash their hopes.

Also, I think once we hit 50 members, we may start to grow a little faster, because we'll be bigger than all the bowls marked "1-50" which seem to populate the lower half of the list of bowls. Hopefully appearing higher on the list will lead to more frequent discovery by our target audience, and thus faster growth.

At 8am this morning Pacific time, I admitted our 100th member. Thank you all for being early adopters in what I hope will be a vibrant and useful community for senior marketing leaders!

Please help us get to the next milestone by posting a link to the bowl in other relevant bowls you are members of (I'll only admit qualified joiners). The bigger we are, the greater our collective knowledge base, and the more likely it is that someone will have an answer or perspective you need when you need it.

I'm looking for someone to run Adroll for a startup with a $5k a month ad spend. How many hours a week will that take and how much should I pay them?

We're getting a new member or two each day. Maybe that would increase if current members shared the group and/or invited colleagues to join?

Gang, I'd like your guidance. Requesting approval are: A senior manager at Coinbase, a marketing coordinator at Newco , and a marketing strategist at Brenton Way.

I'm thinking MAYBE on the Senior Manager, but really none of those roles are Director level or above. But I wanted to get the community's take. I just started the bowl, so right now including me, there are five of us comprising the entire community (not bad for the bowl being open for just a couple hours).

With the macroenvironment the way it is, how are your firms evaluating comp increases or stock refreshers this year?

I'd like to put a question to the membership (and we'll be voting on things like this from time to time, incrementally establishing a set of formal criteria for membership which I will post):

How do you feel about admitting senior executives that are not career marketers but are employed at marketing firms? For example, I currently have a member request from an Associate Medical Director a design-focused healthcare creative agency.

Please clarify for me. I say if the salary for the position is $52,000, that's what you include when posting the job opening. Ie: Marketing Assistant: $52K. My supervisor says no, the salary is actually 74,000, because she's including health benefits and PTO on top of the 52.. I said if you post 74,000 and the person finds out it's actually 52 (probably with a take home pay of only 38) they will walk. Who's right?
