I’m looking to expand my font collection, but I don’t have an exorbitant budget. I saw a post here where people said they had collections of 1000+ fonts—someone had 14k, lol. Where do you guys look for fonts? I have Adobe fonts and use Google fonts and Future fonts, but are there other resources for reasonably priced fonts that don’t break the bank? How much do you tend to spend?

I use to get some from Lost Type Co. There are free (optional donation) and relatively well selected & designed.

Will check it out thanks!

Pangram Type Foundry has a pack of over 144 fonts for $27. I brought it and it’s pretty solid

Steal them from work

likefunny

Yes ^ just be careful which ones. Probably doesn’t apply to everyone, but working on art for live music I’ve found a lot of demo fonts and pieces of unlicensed font families get passed around just to crank out local assets. I ended up with an archive of these random fonts on the office computer just so I could open the files, but have no idea what the commercial usage rights are.

Before you download a lot of fonts, have you tried working with all the essential fonts? Having more fonts won’t make your designs better. In fact, Chris do of the futur, recommends focusing on using the essential fonts and their families for all your work. Just something to think about.

Hah, okay. We’re not really talking about what defines ones personal style by the way. But personally speaking - I’m more interested in the ability to do a lot with a little. Limiting oneself to mastering a few fonts isn’t a sign that a designer is stuck. But what do I know, art directors like “pizzazz”.

Letterhead fonts has some really cool fonts but for very specific use cases. My favorite right now is the stuff Kern Club is putting out, they have a lot of free fonts too. Also to anyone saying steal fonts 🖕

Hypefortype and fontshop also pretty solid and reasonably priced. Like others mentioned above I’ll buy them through a freelance gig.

Trial fonts are accessible on almost all type foundry websites, it’s just important that the client is comfortable with purchasing a license for said font when the work becomes public. I would say if you’re just testing a typeface it’s fine to work off of something downloaded from VK or something (which is the Russian version of Facebook that’s like a breeding ground of illegal typefaces) but just to TEST. Always alwaysss even for poster designs try to use licensed purchased typefaces.

like

If it’s a spec piece there’s different types of licensing, that would fall under a “personal license” which is usually more affordable, but in all honesty foundries are a lot less likely to hunt you down over that versus a major brand using their work without proper licensing.

Ah shit didn’t realize ppl were stealing fonts 😅😅😅 I guess i’d feel kinda bad if it was indie font developers less if Hoefler or something...

I think the reason people are wanting to use google fonts is because of the massive cost of using fonts on the web. If you’re a big brand and you want to use Gotham for your headlines, that can double the campaign budget.

Thats what spurred all the same same same looking “custom” typefaces that brands were commissioning.

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?
