I'm looking to hire some AI folks but have very little technical knowledge of the field. How do you interview candidates if you don't understand what they do specifically?

Do you know enough to answer the question: “why do you need AI?”

like

Ask about experimental design and to take them through projects they've done. Filter out the technical mumbo jumbo, you don't actually care if your hire knows more tech terms or more model types. The huge failure rate in ML and DS projects, as well as the employee attrition rate you may have read about is a reality that happens when people hire for the purely modeling skills, which is exactly the part that's hard to understand in regular human language. Instead, look for people who proactively talk about data quality, prediction errors that happen after the modeling process, and why pilots matter. Happy to explain more 1-1 if you want, too lazy to type an essay heh

Behavioral questions, ask them to explain AI concepts "to a layman"

like

“Okay. Your take home exam is to write my system.”

funny

You don't truly understand something unless you can teach it, so see if they can teach some basic concepts.

Talk to people in the field. Find an AI mentor. To teach you what to look for/ask.

I’ve had several great interviews with a few diff companies. Or rather, I thought they went well but then I get the dreaded “thanks but we made the difficult decision to move forward with other candidates”. I’ve asked for feedback but so far have gotten none.

I know it’s competitive out there, but I also don’t know how I can either position myself better, seek positions that are more aligned with my expertise/experience, or work on improving certain areas.

Any advice on how to proceed?

I recently joined company A on an H1b. Because of the immigration team's mistakes, we had to re-file and it took almost 4months for me to join from the date of the offer. As this was getting dragged on, I interviewed at two companies (let's call them Company B and C). After I started at company A, I received offers from both of them with 30% more TC. If I accept one of these offers, that H1b transfer will take another 2months. Will resigning from A burn the bridges? How should I handle this?

Is it a good idea to tell your manager intentions of leaving?

Recently had my review and it didn’t go how I expected. No raise, no promotion. I expressed disappointment but took the criticism I was given to reach my goal in 6 months or a year.

However, there are a number of issues that bother me enough where I want to move on.

The team I am on is small and I know that when I leave, they’ll have a lot on their hands. I only have a couple of interviews scheduled and nothing is solid yet.

Cont. from Previous Post 3 mos 8 rounds: Thank you for your interest in NR. We appreciate the time you took to apply for the CSM position. We were very fortunate to have a strong group of applicants to consider for this role and have recently filled this position. Unfortunately, because this role is no longer available, we will not be moving forward with your application. We will hold onto your application, and if a position opens that closely matches your skillset, we may contact you.

I studied computer science in school but I didn’t do well due to life coming in the way. I got poor grades but ultimately finished my degree without any internship experience.

After three months of job search, I started for 45K at a construction company as a Jr App Support. After a year I shifted in to QA for 65k and now after a year of QA, I have finally gotten a position as a software engineer for 78K base.

The imposter syndrome is finally gone!

Hang in there, hard work pays off.
