I'm looking to pivot from consulting into tech. I've gotten lots of interesting from tech companies on the ops side but am much more interested in product management.

Any advice on books or courses to help make the transition? I'm struggling to land PM interviews at companies that aren't tiny startups :(

I joined Facebook as an PM after a few years at Bain. It's definitely possible to become a PM straight out of consulting without going to business school. I was having similar issues to you when I started trying to break into product. Essentially the companies I was hearing back from where startups who were impressed by the Bain brand. But what I started to realize was my resume wasn't optimized for PM roles and my resume was just banking on Bain and my ivy undergrad brand.

I found the Product Alliance course series and resume template really helpful and saw a major difference in my application response rate after using their stuff. Essentially they teach you how to reframe your resume to make it more product oriented.

Another thing that's really important if you are interested the more established companies like FAANG is referrals. Would definitely recommend getting LinkedIn premium and reaching out to people who are ex McKinsey who are now at the companies you are interested in. You will be pleasantly surprised on how many people will be willing to take your call and then perhaps even refer you to the pm roles you are interested.

Finally, another common path into product is internal transfer. At Facebook, we have teams called market strategy and product strategy which are all former MBB consultants who help us identify trends, provide indepth competitive analysis, etc which helps PMs shape their longer term strategy. I've seen ex consultants from those teams internally transfer and become excellent PMs at Facebook so that's another potential path. Good luck!

All books by Lewis Lin are great for interview prep but you NEED to have some sort of Product experience to get a job as a PM just because of demand-supply ratio for that role. Good luck!

Sure BA1

You can also potentially consider making an internal transition to a PM role once you’re at the company - 2 of my friends started out on the Ops side and pivoted to PM 1-1.5 years in (both were from non-coding backgrounds)

Amazon lets you do PM with pure business background. Can use that as a landing group and switch across companies/teams with experience

B-school is probably the most straightforward way to jump, but PM1 is otherwise right

Do you think culinary school is worth it? I've been a waiter for a year but really want to be a chef. The people I work with say to just start in the kitchen and work my way up but I think culinary school might get me where I want to be faster. The cost is pretty insane though. Any advice?

So, a recruiter gave me feedback that my lack SPHR or SHRM-SCP is causing my resume to be knock out by AI and human recruiters despite my position and work history in Multinationals and being in Technology. They suggested that we put SPHR ( Lapsed). I let it lapse in 2017. What is your opinion? Plus if I were to take another certification - should I take SPHR or SHRM-SCP?

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
