I learned my concealed carry class that if you have a concealed carry license, it preempts (overrides) many of the local firearms restrictions—but as I just poked around to verify I saw something stating if the law was before July 20, 2013 then it still applies, and it looks like the Blair Holt law you cited was passed right before that. Either way if you don’t have an Illinois CCL then that wouldn’t help you, and that takes 3 months (longer if you don’t have a FOID).
I’d probably advise you to talk to an Illinois lawyer with experience in firearms cases.
Apart from strict legality, police may arrest you and confiscate your weapon anyway—in many cases they don’t care what may be strictly legal and let the courts sort it out.
As far as how likely you are to be discovered, it would be hard to predict. I’ve never had police search my home or vehicle, but who knows if or when it might happen?
I’m not sure about the laws. But do wonder if you are moving into your own space or renting in a building? I ask, as I owned a handgun when I moved to Chicago, and many of the high rise buildings had stipulations of no guns allowed on property.
Contact your apartment company or HOA board. Then contact your aldermans office. Between those 2 you’ll know what to do.
IMO:
I’ve lived in Chicago proper for 15 years and never felt like I needed a gun. The single murder in my neighborhood last year resulted from a guy pulling his gun during an attempted car jacking. He lost the duel. All other shootings in my ward were ruled intentional targets.
Something to consider is that the majority of theft/battery comes from groups of kids under 18. They’re fearless because of numbers, youth and the fact that they know their potential punishment by law is significantly reduced as minors. Just give them your phone and wallet.
Takes one incident to bring fear into your posh life. :)
Anyone have local knowledge of how the Blair Holt Assault Weapon Ban is interpreted and enforced by local law enforcement?
Am I really not allowed to keep it locked up in the back of my closet?
I'm a follow-the-rules kinda guy, but I've read there's never been a citation for that ordinance before.
Can I bring it with me, or do I need to find alternate storage options?
I live here and took a ccw class between projects and recommended getting it in Illinois
