I’m new at my firm and I feel like I’m an acquired taste. I’m a bit awkward and my humor is on the sarcastic side. I’m very kind but prefer to be quiet and observe until I feel comfortable. My quietness might come off as standoffish but really it’s just my shyness and insecurity. Another associate started around the same time as me and is over the top bubbly and extroverted. We are super close but I feel like an awkward turtle in comparison. How do I stand out next to an Elle Woods?

I cannot stress this enough: Be yourself! We all bring something different to the table. They probably think your quiet wit is dope as hell. Own it!

Be yourself but know that sarcastic humor doesn't always land well in corporate settings, so know your audience.

Maybe this is more in my head than I realized! I worked from home yesterday and when I came into the office today the receptionist said, “when you’re gone part of the rainbow is missing.” And I practically melted upon hearing that! Maybe I’m just a regular turtle and not an awkward one?

likefunny

Yes, don’t overthink it. You bring something to the table. Elle Woods is awesome but do we really need her twin? Lol

Find out what makes Elle Woods deeply sad since you have gained her trust. Before going into a scheduled staff meeting, walk into her office and inquire about a matter to be subtle but also about “X” to throw off her game. If you’re standing next to someone who’s sad, you’ll suddenly appear to be pleasant

Another Elle Woods hater

This is a very endearing post. :)

You know how they say you shouldn’t act a certain way in a new relationship unless you’re ready to act the same way forever? Same thing applies for jobs. Try to be as nice as possible, smile, etc but be yourself! There’s nothing wrong with quietness. A few years ago I worked with an attorney who was very reserved and quiet, but I will always remember how she would give a genuine smile if you caught her eye in a meeting or something. And who knows, maybe your Elle Woods friend wishes she was more observational like you after sticking her foot in her mouth a few too many times :)

I’m quiet until you get to know me, too, and I have found that my best friends are extroverts because they bring out the best in me and take the attention away from me, which I like. We work so well together - like PB&J. Your Elle Woods will probably become your best work friend. It’s perfectly ok to be the quiet one!

Like others have said, just be yourself. Smiles, friendly hellos, and small talk go a long way. Before you know it, everyone will see and love your authentic sparkle and shine! 😊

Question for senior female bosses. I have an opportunity to network with a senior woman across the pond - what, from your perspective, makes for a good mentor/mentee relationship? My only female mentor is my direct boss and my other mentors are senior men that I’ve known for years and have a relaxed / friendly relationship with.

I really want to get the most out of this but haven’t built a formal relationship with a senior woman before (particularly with a culture difference)

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. A management position at my old in-house firm has now been offered to me. Higher salary obviously and no billables. I am seriously dreading talking to my new boss and telling my friend that I want to go back in-house. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I just feel so bad and don’t want to burn bridges

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).

Anyone else deal with others passing judgment because of your age? I’m 30, married, and carry myself in a professional manner but still deal with random comments related to my age. Today I was complimented for my “maturity” for how I responded to a problem and it was shared that a partner or two also commented on my maturity. It rubbed me the wrong way and although these comments are less frequent now than when I first started my career, I still hear them and it’s bothersome.
