yep - you are getting screwed. Mgrs should create slides and prepare for client presentations.

What they do in real life is have meetings to plan what they will say in other meetings....all while delegating the real work to seniors and associates

I’m a senior manager in tech consulting. My role varies depending on the project. Sometimes I’m building slides end to end. But typically, I like to co-create at the beginning to help get a draft of the deck going & share my ideas / hear their ideas, then give more junior folks time to work on it together, then QA again / help refine / maybe co-create a bit more to further support, but at the end of the day, I want my team members to take ownership of a deliverable and get it done. If I don’t push them they will never learn. I am pretty skilled at creating slides, and sometimes I get the itch to “just do it myself”, but I don’t want to rob them of the opportunity to grow. I also need to free myself up for other work, and that can only happen if the team can work somewhat independently for a while.

You have summarized consulting really well over there. Solid stuff as a newcomer :)

Well, managers can ask you to create slides but I am surprised at the staffing of your project. 3M and 1 SC. Like in what world is that profitable. In most projects, a M will have 1 or more SC with C and A below them so the work can be distributed equitably.

like

I was staffed once as 1C, 2SC & 3SM (2 PT SM)!Completely inverted structure. But the project value was large and it led to sell an implementation between 5-10 larger than the original

You can see this kind of staffing in projects where you need a lot of expertise. It's more about the content than the slides. Strategy gigs can be staffed like 1SM, 1 M and 1 SC. The SC will do all the slides.

Managers are flex capacity. They do hands-on work when needed. Otherwise, they mostly QB the work streams.

I do a lot of hands-on work when the consultants on the team are new or not good. They take the first pass and I essentially redo their work 😁.

It’s a strange staffing, but yes staff/senior create slides and M and SM/D review.

M/SMs job is to make sure the engagement goes well, handle the client, and review and comment on deliverables.

They should absolutley make slides. My team it’s me and another senior 1 manager and 3 directors. We almost all have an even split on slide content

I have been in my position for a year and am getting used to judging how much work I need to meet my billable requirement. One of the partners I work with a lot told me that I am over capacity YTD and that others in our group are below capacity, suggesting that I shouldn't ask for as much work. I make sure to ask for work when I start to see my project list dwindling. I also want to make sure I have a cushion for time off. He could not give me a straight answer as to what to do. Any suggestions?

Anyone have experience working as a contract Project Manager? I’ve been in medical device manufacturing for almost 6 years, currently making $120k as a Project Manager. Getting a lot of recruiters for contract positions in the same industry. Do these typically guarantee 40 hours per week? If so, it seems a no brainer to consider as I could bump my pay up to $150k-$180k and be able to change projects every year. What’s been your experience working as a contract PM? Would you recommend?
