If you care about utilization - reach out to scheduling as soon as you slow down. The best approach is to ask your deal team if the deal is at a point where you can reach out to get staffed on something else so you don't have downtime.

When you’re brand new and not a known team member - you should be reaching out the day after a project wraps. If you’re a known highly rated resource, hide as long as you can
Stay in contact with directors and managers in your group. Typically they can plug you in quicker than resource managers if you're new. It'll help build rapport as well.
