I'm not 30 yet and my lower back seems off and hurts when I bend sometimes. What can I do to fix this?

Foam roll your butt, hamstrings and hips - we sit all day and our muscles tighten up from lack of movement and stretching.

likesmarthelpful

This. Sometimes it’s from tight quads or hip flexors. So don’t forget rolling front and sides.

like

Stretch every single day. People seriously underestimate the power of flexibility.

like

Agreed, Deloitte should stretch some more of those dollars out to me

A good chiropractor will change your life

like

Kk you tell that to my before and after x-rays, I’m not arguing with your ignorance. There are good doctors and bad doctors and good Chiros and bad chiros

Exercise. Use your core. Only thing that will help. Start small of out of shape but does wonders. Was going to a chiropractor in Q4 2019 (oh the memories) for hip and back pain. I worked out a few times per week and wasn’t overweight but had the pain from the sitting all day. Once I started moving every single day it disappeared. Standing desk would help as well (I don’t have one but it would be good for your core).

like

I don’t have any personal experience but some people I know have claimed to benefit from acupuncture.

like

Stretch and stand/walk more during the day. As annoying as Apple’s stand reminders are, I do use them to get up, grab a glass of water and stretch.

like

Invest in a desk chair if possible. Supporting your lumbar is key!

like

I'll look into that, thanks!

This will sound suuuuper lame, but get really good orthotics and always wear them. I always bought cheap shoes with no arch support and walked at least 5 miles a day in my 20s and now I have fallen arches and horrible back pain and can barely walk a mile. Orthotics!

like

I walk a lot too. Thanks! This is good to know, I'm going to look these up

Avoid chiropractors at all costs. Do not subject your back to a "treatment" that was invented by a mentally ill grocery store clerk who claimed aliens told him to do these treatments. Do not allow chiropractors who get their "degrees" from "schools" located in shopping malls and dont even require a HS diploma for admission.

Only trust your back to someone who went to medical school.

I'm a little nervous going to a chiropractor tbh. Sounds like it works for a lot of people but I have the same reservation as you do PL1.

Strengthen your abs/core

Awesome thanks all! I'll look into exercises tomorrow! Also take more breaks during the day

EY2 what do you think the breaks are for?

Make sure you have a quality desk chair and mattress. Changed my life...no more aches and pains.

Yeah i might need an upgrade on my chair. Thanks!

Yoga, at a studio not a gym. Tell the instructor and they will have stretches for you. Also agree that acupuncture and chiropractor may be helpful if the stretching isn’t enough.

like

For a minute I forgot we are in a pandemic. If you can find a yoga instructor who does a live stream you can ask them for specific direction and attention to that area in the class.

There’s an online program called The Ready State focused on helping you improve mobility in 10-20 mins a day. Highly recommend it.

Thanks! ill check it out!

Walk.

I walk every evening after work. About 30-60 minutes in the park

I went to a PT and it made a world of difference. They’re much better than a chiropractor.

How much vegetables do you all manage to consume a week? I realized my weekly intake maybe low, but I can't really think of ways to increase it. I usually end up consuming a pound of spinach, 1 broccoli, 3-4 carrots, and maybe 200 grams of other vegetables. Plus tomatoes and onions as base for curries.
This seems pretty low, but can't really think of ways to increase my intake with a predominantly Indian diet.

Has anyone purchased a Sleep Number bed in the past or recently, what are your thoughts? Worth it? Seems like a great investment for healthier sleep, and not waking up with a sore back (or anything), but shelling out $5k++ for a king size seems a little extravagant. I’m definitely going to a store to see in person prior to making a decision. Just curious what others’ experiences have been.

Thanks!
