You know you’re a tax accountant if.....
If you are starting as an Audit Associate some time from now with Deloitte or any of the big 4, do they expect you to have passed/completed all 4 parts by the time you start? Received the Becker Reimbursement email from the recruiter not too long ago but have yet to start. I’ve seen plenty of people get to Senior at a big 4 firm without the CPA so I am a bit confused in that aspect. Any helpful feedback will be very much appreciated.

I don’t think the years or title matter tbh. Go for a job you find interesting and don’t look back.
Same. Senior 1. I wanted to stay until I get the manager title but I don’t know anymore.
In the same boat. I want the manager title then I’m outie. However. If another opportunity falls in my lap, for the right price I’ll leave tomorrow
Do what makes you happy!
You definitely need to do something about the off the books work. Talk to your counselor or even your core team if you are really close. I would definitely stick up for my seniors and talk to that other manager.
I had a similar goal and have stayed at EY. I have a lot of good exit opportunities right now. I had a colleague leave as a Senior and went to a Fortune 100 company. He’s now at a Sr Manager equivalent role there. Point is, you can be successful in both places. You’ll have to work hard regardless. But choose a path where you’ll excel at.
Once I got to senior I had 0 intention of getting to manager. I'm leaving for a senior FP&A role and have no regrets.
If I were you, I'd at least test the market and see what's out there for you. Large majority of people leave before manager for a reason. If you don't see anything you like then stay.
I'm guessing you are in tax. Tbh most people in FP&A are audit or finance background. Having a FDD background is even better. Not sure how you'd make the switch from tax, although I'm not saying you can't.
If you can somehow transfer to FDD you'd be set up for FP&A. Otherwise it's gonna take a lot of convincing and networking. You really need a good understanding of the financials and business drivers.
Honestly of everyone I know that has left. The ones that left as Senior got the sweetest jobs.
Same place as you. First year Senior, miserable. But I want to get to Manager.
I felt that way, but as a senior 3 I’ve really been contemplating if it’s worth it. Seems like the “business case” is super political in my region despite my performance dials indicating I’m ready for manager promo. Probably going to explore exits if I don’t make manager this year.
It’s probably best to take time off until you recover from your surgery and reassess your situation afterwards. This stressful time hinders the healing process and you may have a change of heart afterwards. Get well soon!
What’s the right price to leave?
I got an offer for six figures last month, but turned it down because of progression. Also because the job itself didn’t feel very interesting to me when I really thought about it. But someone I worked with pressured me to stay and said they couldn’t find anyone at that point. I naively believed them, and guess what, they did find someone. It was a very small part of why I turned down the offer, but still annoying.
If you find another job you like, go for it. I won’t wait for the manager title or even stay any longer if I’m already miserable here. I would switch team to try to get a breath and in the meantime looking for other opportunities
If you get a good exit at senior 3 don’t wait for manager it may not still be there when you are ready for it.
I’m staying half because of immigration issue and half because of that manager title. Hang in there and better time will come soon enough!
I made M1 at big4 and quit a few months later for an accounting manager position in PE. My goal was to always make manager before reevaluating my career options. In hindsight, staying until manager got me a sweet position that I’m very happy in. That being said, I potentially could have also gotten this same position as an S3 but probably nothing less. It was all worth it for me. I also experienced a lot of health issues throughout my senior years and, as others have mentioned, just put up strong boundaries and started saying no more. Manager promos are almost a given so that shouldn’t impact a promo
I know a lot of assoc or young seniors who left and are still stuck in senior positions, so something to consider. But overall health is the most important!!
