I'm not really too sure how to feel about this , I'm Head of People at a remote start-up in Toronto but we have folks across USA/South America as well. I've been here for almost 6 months, we've been growing aggressively, I've been setting up every process from scratch/building my team. I report to the COO, recently he said they are going to hire a VP, People, they feel it will help with a Series B. They said it has nothing to do with my performance. How should I feel?

I had that conversation after I had some time to process and was given an insufficient answer. My manager is one of the co-founders and he talked about how he feels like he doesn't have anything to contribute as he doesn't come from HR. I will try to be more direct. Thank you for the great advice!

Unfortunately this happens and I think a lot of it has to do with a “name” having someone from a larger company that has driven initiatives to support company growth. While it’s not fair, you have every reason to feel a bit hurt or unappreciated. This is 100% a funding tactic.

My first reaction was that this decision was very demotivating and I expressed that. I was told in 1 years time I will move into the VP role and they will move into SVP- seems a bit unnecessary to me

I would report to this VP and be their only direct report. I have built a 6 person team under me (all things HR including a team of 3 recruiters)

I understand why you feel guarded but use this as an opportunity to learn. They want a big name to attract funding and solidify the company’s position within the market. This happens frequently in start ups. Learn/understand the process and take notes. When another opportunity comes (because it will) you can say you have this experience. You never know, you might be the ‘big name’ being brought in at a different company.
