First rule work with a Director or higher. You don't get much out of working with seniors.
Basically, your bench time is precious and for building your brand. Don't tell everyone you are on the bench. Reach out only to Directors and Partners who will help you further your career. Even managers don't have that much influence.
Take PTO, be out sick, and find a project.
Tell your coach as well. This seems like an abusive situation.
So when asked if I have bandwidth to support a proposal I should just say no? I just worry doing that because this senior is pretty connected (although not liked by most PPDs) and don't want a follow up asking why I can't help. My practice has a pretty small bench right now and a lot of proposals so it's hard to hide. Part of the trouble is I'm not even being asked to help but rather just told by this person what I'm helping with next
You sound exactly like a friend of mine!
Best way out is to get staffed on something billable.
Np. I used to be willing to help anyone when on the bench. Not a smart move. Only spend your time on things that get you face-time with people who are going to help you advance.
Find something to work on with a Director or your RP. Say you are interested in their area, and give the Senior an end date. You are not the Senior's bitch. Making slides for Seniors won't get you very far. I actually learnt this from an Associate.
Any tips for how to deal with this? I just seriously need a break but haven't had any down time besides a few hours of crappy quality sleep in over a week.
Thanks SA1! I will definitely reach out to my coach and some directors I like working with this week
Also this is not some huge secret, and it's not sleazy. Even my RP recently organized an initiative where he spent a lot of time pitching his ideas to senior leadership. Everybody does it.
Op- Leverage your coach and RP. Ask for their advice on how to balance things. Make sure you mention that you are absolutely happy to help and support proposals but are very overwhelmed at this point with the ones you are supporting. Ask your coach on best approach to saying no to the SA.
Start helping them with other proposals or internal initiatives. Tell the SA that you're happy to help but have competing priorities with other proposal/initiatives. Also, make sure the manager/director/ partner knows that you've been working on stuff with the SA. Recognition is important.
It sounds like this senior isn't currently staffed because he/she is a dick. Absolutely take the advice of those above and reach out to people higher up in the food chain.
Second the counselor/coach advice. Another option is to get on one of the projects that come out of those proposals, but you will need to network with someone who calls the shots on staffing (Senior managers/partners/directors)
Been there! Did you try to talk to him about his behavior?
@OP are you PwC? In R&C?
@P3 no K. What's R&C?
You stressed about super tight deadlines and work over the weekends? Prey you never get on a client as that only gets worse
