I’m on week 3 of being without a job after not being hired back at my firm after articling. I’ve been speaking/networking to lawyers almost every day but I’m feeling pretty defeated already. I’m interested in commercial real estate/ development/ and infrastructure and construction law. Just feel like it’s going to be hard to get my foot in any door related to that after only articling.

Can’t speak to Canada but it may be similar to the US in that this practice area is deader than dead with COVID. Everyone is hunkered down waiting to see what happens. My friends in commercial real estate have no work. You may want to broaden your search.

Not sure what “articling” is. Is this a Canada thing?

Yes, it’s Canadian thing. In order to be licensed you must pass your provinces bar exam and complete the “experiential training” requirement, which is articling. It’s basically an internship with a law firm (or any other place that has a legal department that is qualified to supervise you). The placement is 10-12 months

Are there any pro bono efforts to help people in need in other legal areas just so you can still be getting experience? What about helping underserved groups with evictions or landlord tenant matters through local organizations? May be worth seeing what types of services exist so you can keep learning while something more permanent comes up!

Hi all. I am licensed in life, accident and health and am looking for new opportunities. I am a high performer, but not sure I’m valued much at all . I want to reach the top and become partner in my career ; this is why I went to work for a small firm. My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

Remote Opportunities have declined hugely since the last 2 quarters. Most of IT companies are calling back their people. It's strange that if work can be done from anywhere, and an employee turned more productive by working from home, why are companies still doing that.
Seems like this will be the reason of paradigm shift from fulltime jobs to gig. Lately, companies will have to accept it, and they'll hire talent on pure contract or project basis.

Any opinions?

Am I making enough profit for my firm?

I became a 2 year lawyer in September. I started working at my firm, a mid-sized firm practicing commercial business litigation and PI, in March of 2020. Last year I made the firm $180k from my billable hours and I was paid $85k + full health and other benefits.

This year, I'm on track to make about $150k and to make the firm about $450k from my billable hours and PI cases that I originated and settled.

Trying to do right for my firm. I'm treated well.
