I’m over my union. Membership isn’t cheap, and I don’t really know what they do. Sorry, I’m a new teacher and don’t have time to dig into this.

Union Dues are awful. And they may seem unnecessary. But trust me they are worth it. My third year teaching we got a new principal. She came in and thought she was going to reinvent teaching. She changed rules, wrote people up for no reason, and tried to get many people fired. The only thing that protected us was the union. She lasted 6 months. Now I’m not a big union guy and I do think it has a lot of flaws but because of the constant changes in administration it will protect you from people like my former principal

Dues can be high but they are there to protect you and your colleagues. Our Union is how we got a 45 minute planning period every day in our district, how we negotiate our contracts, and how we negotiate our school calendar for the year. They ensure we are being treated fairly on a regular basis. I’m very sorry if your union isn’t doing their job or making you feel that they are important because it is.

If you’re in it just for liability insurance and many are, there is NSTA for, if I remember correctly, $85/year, you get some good benefits. No collective bargaining but there is liability insurance. As a science teacher, I recommend you get that just in case a lab goes off the rails or something unforeseen happens. Plus, they have great resources and ideas specific to science education, even journals for different levels: elementary, middle school, high school, and university settings.

I am newly in a wheelchair and am unable to find clear information on the ADA website about what my job is required to do. I’ve talked with my Union Rep and they are checking. I’m requesting to be on a 504 plan, but I have no idea if they are required to add handicapped entrances or not. I know I have to scan my badge to use the button, but trying to scan my badge, open the door, and not drop anything seems a bit unattainable to me at the moment. Anyone have some insight or dealt with this?

First timer and can drive to mammoth/lake tahoe so that saves on airfare, but b/w just the 2.5hr lesson, gear rental, clothing rental, and 3 day lift tickets, that’s $1000 alone. I wanna do it before my body can’t handle an activity like that (I have patellar tendonitis, herniated disc) but man, this trip is costing more than half of what I predict one of our Euro trips next year will cost.
