I’m planning to build out a set of wealth management tools and would love to get some feedback. When planning for retirement, how would you prioritize the following (and is there anything else you’d consider)
1) early retirement - minimizing the age required to get just enough wealth/ savings to retire (I.e., your target wealth at death is zero)
2) inheritance - maximizing the value of your wealth at the time of your deaths

Not planning to have kids so if I have any wealth at the end of my life it’s going to charity, so I’m prioritizing 1

I’ll donate my end-of-life wealth so voting for 1.

I come from a legacy family, so big time pressure to prioritize 2 😂. Those before me did it for me, so I will do it for my kids. It will depend mostly on your values.

“Legacy family” - can’t wait until someone uses that in a casual conversation with me

2 > 1

Generational family practice, and maybe I’ll feel different when my kids are older, but right now I think it’s important to create generational wealth.

It’s just harder for each generation to try and make it anew.

I married into it, but everyone always seems determined to do as much as they can all the time. People work hard, some white collar, some blue.

Control hasn’t been an issue. I mean, we’ve been opinionated but generally things are fair and split well.

Independence will eventually be an issue. For now keep me out of it! Lol

Other financial goals/priorities when planning for retirement

2 is slightly more important to me.

My family came from poverty and my husband's was very working class. We now live somewhere with lots of generational wealth.

We'd like to leave a paid off house to each child. They can either live there or use it as investment income. We highly doubt our children will surpass us in income generation, so making sure they always have a roof over their heads is important to us.

But, my kids are their own people and need to put their own work in; I'm not working my ass off so they can fuck around in adulthood.

I’m using TurboTax and hoping someone can clarify if what I am doing is correct. I contributed to Roth IRA, but MAGI is above limit so I recharacterized in 2022. For 2021 tax return, I selected Traditional IRA > No to repayment of distribution > No to excess IRA contributions > No to non deductible contributions to IRA…after saying No to all of the questions, it states that I have a penalty. I thought I didn’t have to pay a penalty if I recharacterized? Any help appreciated!
