I’m planning to leave my current employer in January. Have some money in traditional 401k. Wanted to move all into Roth IRA tho.... What’s the consequences of this move? Pay the tax on it? Anything else that I should keep an eye on? Appreciate any advice!

For folks who moved from US to Canada how did you deal with financial assets when moving from US to Canada? I eventually want to return to US. I have a 401k/Roth IRA/HSA/Brokerage Account/Savings Account/Checking Account. I don't want to bring all my finances to Canada. I'm a foreign national in the US. Ideally I want to have a setup where I can draw from my funds in US to CA on a need basis. But how do you make sure not paying extra when dealing with currency exchange?

Alternative investments for Roth IRA? I'm currently investing my 401k, Roth 401k, and HSA in Vanguard index funds with my targeted retirement date, VTSAX, & SPY. I'm looking to invest funds moved into a Roth IRA and it seems to overexpose me to the same markets and core stocks if I were to further allocate into the same items above. What are some solid Small / Mid cap funds that may or may not be in other markets? Or am I over thinking this?

Company offers 200% match on the first 3% of 401k contributions, vested immediately. How is that relative to other firms?

At what age do you plan on retiring? I’d like to work until I’m 63 or so, but it doesn’t seem like many in our industry last that long. Is there an unspoken push to get rid of 60+year old partners? If you left consulting around 60, would it even be possible to get a job in industry? Seems like we would be too expensive and too old to be considered by most companies.

$130k is not enough to cover living expenses for me and my wife in N. Va. We always overspend by around $300 every month. We are doing this thing where we live on my income (the 130k) and save all the money my wife makes, because I was naive enough to think I made a lot of money. I feel like we are relatively frugal, so I was surprised to find that $130k was not enough for two people. Just wanted to share. Thoughts?

What is each firm's 401k matching/profit sharing policy?

Is there a difference between 250k salary and 400k salary? Both salaries are watching spiderman on opening night. Both salaries have food on the table and a roof over their heads. One has a 65in tv vs the other has 75in. One drives a BMW the other a Tesla. I make around 250k and to increase my salary I will have to work a lot more. Is it really worth having more money, at some point it is just a number and quality of life doesn't improve. In fact it could be worse with the extra hours.

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.
