I’m pretty much never able to take uninterrupted vacation for more than a day or two at a time and have zero predictability on whether weekends will have to be thrown out each week to the point that I feel like I have no control over my life/ability to make basic plans. Curious about others’ experience in forensics and whether this is the norm or if I just work under some particularly bad bosses

Working for top 20 law firms as clients/clients’ counsel made me on call 24/7 it felt. Even worse as I moved up because only so many senior people had the constitution and experience to lead a fire drill investigation and the lower level people churn out quick. I was losing my mind as the lawyers always seemed to email after months of silence the day before a vacation or holiday with something with a tight turnaround. Now could I say they were being unreasonable? Yea, but I would not make it very far and they wouldn’t call me next time. So after many years of this and probably somewhat close to partner (2-4 years) I don’t think I can keep going like this as my kids are growing.

I was going to ask if you set up your coverage for leave, if you do then they should leave you alone and only go to who's covering you. Then you said weekends and nope that's a no. Get out of there

Dunno if this helps but as I’ve gotten more senior it’s easier to hand off and trust my team to keep the plates spinning while I’m gone. Yes, would love to say I always check out when I go on PTO and don’t let anyone bother me but that’s a lie. The more control I have, the more I’ve been able to delegate and rely on my team. For me, it got better with age / seniority.

Which firm are you at?

Had this at EY, you tech focused?

I am not

I wouldn’t say this should be the norm…maybe every now and then? But there are definitely firms/managers that value WLB

So it's the nature of the beast. Over here, and I'm assuming everywhere else, we have crunch time where it gets a little wild and we pull some stupid hours. Here's the thing though, we take out hours back. We don't burn you till you're crispy. If that happens we lose good people.

Here's my caveat, with uncle D we have so many teams I can't tell you how your team would be. I can promise you you'd run into a team that's exactly like yours. Luckily we're getting to a point where leadership (at least in our area but to an extent all of) are really trying to find issues like that and stop it. They know it's not a healthy way to work and are attempting to fix it.

I guess tldr grass might be greener but it could be just as dead as your own grass. I'd attempt to switch projects at your firm if you can. If they all are run by crazy people diiiiiiiiip out of there

I’m six months into practicing law at a small firm where I’m the only woman of color. Lately I’ve been experiencing such intense burnout/exhaustion/mental health blocks when it comes to work, I feel like I’m no longer being a good proactive employee/learner— and then I get more stressed out because I don’t want them to think I’m feeling this was because I’m a woman of color? Idk, this is a dumb burden that we have to carry and I’m just so tired!

You’re either not valuable to your company and/or your job isnt that important if you’re able to take PTO and not at least send some e-mails.

My spouse has made it clear to me that they no longer support me working in biglaw and want me to find a job with more reasonable hours. They were supportive early in my career and when we had one child, but our second was born a couple of years ago and all the additional work they put in at home, the lack of family time and lack of couples time is becoming a big strain on our marriage. We are in a high cost of living city so will have to undergo a major lifestyle change if we forego my biglaw..

Hello everyone!
I recently found out that I was being paid less than everyone in the team (more than 25% gap to more expe teammates, around 15% less than new hires)
We all had the same responsibilities, I consider I even had a heavier workload (talking in past tense since I very recently made an internal move).
Things to consider:
On a work visa
Non-white
Non-male
What would you recommend doing?
Keeping it to myself?
Speaking up? How? With who?

-TIA

Not sure if this is the area to ask this question but my CEO and COO is coming to our branch to do a meet and greet and I think this is the best opportunity to bring some suggestions that I think I want to see. First concern is that the place I work for is not paid holiday. We have 8 observant holiday in a year and we are required to use on these holidays. That's 64 hours of my pto I have to use? Is there a suggestion I can bring up where I have an option to work on those days? Or do flex time?

How consistent are your executives with their holiday gifts? one partner I support gave me $250 my first year with him and $500 last year. I really go above and beyond for him and in my feedback this month he told me I am the best EA he has ever had, so I was expecting at least the same. He has given me nothing this year (always gives it mid december or before I go on break -which I am now) also always give an e-gift card so not like it got lost in the mail. Not sure what to think...

How do you bill time on a Sunday, if you’re in a specialty group assisting on a deal that is about to close, and there are a lot of documents moving back and forth, so you’re expected to be tied to your desk waiting for drafts to come in to review, revise and turn quickly, but about half the time you’re just in waiting mode and can’t really do anything useful in the five to ten minute increments between documents coming in. Seems unfair to only bill 5 hours when stuck at your desk for 10.
