I’m pretty sure I’m about to get an offer from a new firm and will be leaving my current firm before the end of the year. In the meantime my current firm has been dumping more work on me for things that are expected to close before Dec. 31 (mostly b/c my firm keeps losing more and more associates each month). I feel bad saying yes to the work when I’m likely leaving soon, but I don’t want to tip my firm off before giving my official notice. Any advice?

You’re still collecting a paycheck. Accept the work and do the work until you provide notice. Then close out as much as you can during your notice period and your firm will deal with transitioning the new work to someone else. You’re not doing them any favors by not accepting work right now that you can make progress on while you’re still there.

Definitely fair, and I do want to help as much as I can before I leave. I guess I more or less just feel a little bad and disingenuous knowing that some of the partners reaching out to me with work are doing so under the assumption that I’ll be around to handle everything. I mostly don’t want to feel like I’m screwing anyone over, but you’re right that the best way to avoid that is just to get things as far along as I can before my last day and help make it a smooth transition. Appreciate your input!

Until you have an offer in hand, it's business as usual. And then it's probably still business as usual until you actually give notice.

Same boat, more or less. Have offer and know my start date at new place. But it’s not til first week of December. So working on everything as usual until I give notice that last day will be the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I know there are big projects due in December so I’m getting started on what I can to help whomever has to pick up the work.

I constantly think back to my ex wife (ended 3 years ago) now that I’m in another serious relationship. I compare this one with that one and find myself missing what my ex and I had.

I’ve been interviewing at 2 companies & I got an offer today from 1 & I have an interview with the other on Friday. I think the 2nd company will have higher pay & it’s a better role. I want to keep both options open but I know that the 1st company is trying to get someone started quickly & I don’t want to lose the offer just in case the other falls through. Would it be ok to ask the 2nd company to move my interview up or should I just leave it & hold on accepting the 1st offer?
