Just start smoking and you wont even notice it.
Third hand smoke is a lie by big lung to get us to buy more lungs.

IMO need to remove almost everything — Sheetrock, flooring, sub flooring.
Make sure to also demo the foundation and start over. Maybe a new kitchen remodel to while you are at it.
"Third hand smoke" is going to be less toxic for you than the off-gassing from the new paint job and carpet/drapes you will need.

I would never

Contact a restoration company and get a quote on what it will cost to properly clean/replace everything to make it livable. Keep in mind you don’t want to move anything in until EVERYTHING is done or your stuff will all have a stale smoke smell.

I don’t think “third hand smoke problems” will be a real thing to worry about from a health perspective. But you’ll definitely need to replace any wallpaper, drapes, carpets, and other porous surfaces to get rid of the smell. Unless it’s been 30 years of smoking, drywall will be fine with a coat of primer and paint. Wood shouldn’t be a problem if the varnish is in good shape.

Not true if a heavy indoor smoker.
I rented an apartment after a smoker once. and thought repainting all the walls would do it. But after about 20 showers, my bathroom walls started sweating this yellow liquid. Nicotine was literally dripping from the walls!

This was happening in my last apartment but I did not know why. I guess now I know
Any house built before 1970 was smoked in, and thats a lot of houses in this country...
My parents bought their current home 20+ years ago and the previous owner definitely smoked in the house, mainly the 2 front rooms. They ripped up the carpet, stained the wood floors, repainted, replaced curtains and all of that. Honestly didn’t notice after all of that.

No because that means that smoking is allowed in the building and you will be stuck smelling your neighbors cigarette smoke and pot smoke. Try to move into a smoke-free building

Possibly. Or OP's seller just broke the rules and never got caught/they weren't enforced.
Anything porous goes. Get an air filter and run non stop for a few days, or just central air/heat fan through a Merv 11-13 filter. Do that in every room AFTER carpet, curtains, porous items are removed.
Your more apt to find 2 decomposing dead bodies, like they did today at Hotel Versace, than be affected by third hand smoke. I would hope you would replace window treatments, carpet, paint, sand and poly the floors before moving in anywhere. Putting down a new floor or replacing drywall with chinese manufactured drywall is more dangerous than 3rd hand smoke Yep I’m a smoker but smoke outside for this reason
Didn't put in an offer on a home for this very reason last week. In addition, there were cigarette butts in the vents 🙆🏾♀️. Based on what I've read, you would need to paint with Kilz to block the odor and also rent an Ozone machine along with the other things suggested.

Kilz is probably needed on every paintable surface.

I don’t think third hand smoke would be a huge issue but not a scientist. But oh my God smoke permeates everything- gets into the dry wall, the carpet. Was the owner a heavy smoker or just casual? Washing the walls and painting will likely not solve the problem.
Just open your windows, paint, and replace any carpets or curtains. You’d probably do those things if purchasing from a non-smoker, I would hope.
Yeah. I'd definitely get the heavy duty KILZ primer out before just painting.
If this person has not been smoking inside you’re fine?
