I started as an intern at 37. You’ll be good! It’s the older people making too much $ that usually get the axe. Just kick ass and you’re golden. I feel like I chased security at my first job and it hurt me slightly. Should have gone to SF. But I’m not miserable or anything.
I used to think that following the work is what matters. But having done that and having won the awards, I wonder whether I would encourage people to do the same. It's fine to do in your 20s, but in your 30s priorities change. Working with nice people and having a work life balance are way more important. So if you have the chance to be somewhere like that, take it. You're never going to look back and regret spending more time with family and friends.
Go to the best agency with the best creative output. You’ll be worth a lot more already after a year there.
In my humble, mid-level opinion, don’t follow the money or you might get stuck. Follow the work. Unless you really love it and don’t plan on ever going to a major market. Then, take the $ and be happy in Pleasantville. Good luck!
How many people telling this person not to worry about the money are in their 30s or were when you started out?
Chase the work bud and the money will follow.
I had the same problem. 30yo finishing ad school. I had two offers and I took the one with better work. The difference was minus $10k annual and I still took it. The rationale I had was that probably I can increase that quicker in the "good work" agency than in the "good pay" agency. My second problem is that I'm a woman, and sometime in the next 2 years I might try for a baby, so at this point I'm just hoping that doesn't hurt me too much career-wise lol.
Go for the work, then go client side.
Work for the most reputable agency that will hire you. This is not the time to cash in. Trust me. What kind of money are we even talking about? What’s really the difference between $55k and 65k?
Strictly for the huge salary... Obviously I'm joking. I got into it because Nike ads changed my life (they didn't). I actually got into it because I wanted to write the stuff people ignore while waiting for the stuff they pay attention to. I kid. Honestly, I just love to write and advertising is a relatively stable way to do that for a living. As much as I want to do great things I am an adult with bills and someone who depends on me so money does matter and the salary discrepancy is much larger than people are guessing.
Swallow my pride and just take the higher pay from the mediocre agency in the cheaper market. The people are nice and I love the culture.
I'm worried it will torpedo my career long term but I really need the money and stability after two years of ad school.
Any similar experiences would help.
It's not a tiny market. It's just not NY, SF, LA. And it's a big agency it just doesn't have the pedigree of the others. Part of me also feels like I'll get booted out of this industry in10 years anyways for being "old" so I might as well do what I can now.
Grey 1 I honestly believe that if they don’t start well now, they’ll have to worry a lot more till their 40s
Why did you want to get into advertising?
