Have you communicated that you need a response urgently? Have you tried contacting a peer or subordinate on their team to see if they can help? Have you called? Supervisor should be your last resort you don’t want to burn a bridge when you’re new it’ll make it hard to establish other relationships at the company.

Even if she’s the only one with the info I’d call someone who works closely with her but isn’t her boss and say “ I need x by date and I can’t get ahold of Karen can you help me get that information or get in touch with her?”

like

Do you have other in-house lawyers to cover with? Cc’ing the boss is a high risk maneuver for a new in house lawyer. Most companies have an established process in which counsel and businesspeople tolerate one another and if you step on that process you may create further problems for yourself.

like

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah welcome to being in house. You’re actively ignored.

like

I would maybe try calling a couple times too. Then send an email with the supervisor CC’d “I’ve been trying to reach you about X. Please let me know when you can be available.”

At this point I cc the supervisor. If that doesn’t work my next step is to forward the email chain and email the supervisor directly. Honestly, I’ve also needed to go to the next level up to get a response on a couple of occasions.

Update: she finally responded to my Teams IM after I calendared a meeting. Said systems were down (we work for a company that sends outage notices and haven’t gotten any in weeks, so whatever). It’s nice to have an acknowledgment that it was received, even if she didn’t actually do anything with my question yet.

Well said! Appreciate the guidance- really enjoy my job and this is the first bump in the road I’ve had
