I’m seeing so many nice affordable rents in Midtown, what’s the catch? Everyone tells me midtown is boring/no culture. Is this true?

I work in midtown and would never want to live there. It’s very corporate feeling with a lack of bars and restaurants I would actually want to spend my non-work time at (I.e., there are lots of stuffy $$$$$ ones or takeout joints and sports bars).

Didn’t say there weren’t bars and restaurants...just not cool ones

Define affordable. They are still pricey as can be

@Consultant2 I found this one in a big FB housing group, joined a handful of them and just kept my eyes peeled, jumping on any that looked attractive and immediately asking to set up a viewing. There are some good deals popping up on Streeteasy though and similar websites. Landlords are desperate to fill them and the sooner you see the apt (before others do) and apply, the more likely it is you'll get it.

You don’t have to live right where you go out. I’d just make sure to live where there are transportation options

I’ve lived in midtown for a few years. It’s true that there’s not nearly as much stuff to do / eat at, but (1) it’s usually pretty convenient to get around, and (2) as B1 says you don’t need to live where you hang; bonus points if it’s close to where you work!

I’m not sure it’s about elitism, but there’s no “neighborhood” feel in midtown that many places in Manhattan and Brooklyn have. To me, it’s critical to love my neighborhood...it brings me a lot of joy to come home and separate and go to my local haunts and know I can just walk home...

As a midtowner this is confusing comment! Yes, avoid Midtown East at all costs since it’s a literal dead zone, and Times Square/Theatre District are just as avoidable as they were pre-Covid, but the west side of Midtown has a lot. Chelsea, Meatpacking, and Hells Kitchen are all technically Midtown areas and great spots to be in.

We have ~$400k HHI. Monthly expenses are ~$6k (1 child). We live in Austin. We’re seriously considering getting a 900k to 1M house which we wouldn’t be considering if the market in Austin wasn’t so crazy but we’re really big on proximity to culture/resources and need to stay in the area (can’t move to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio , etc.). We also just honestly feel like the suburbs out here are so very bland. Thoughts on us doing this? Are we crazy? Is this understandable given where we live?

I accepted a job from a place my friend works. She got me in and I'd be dropping a title level but making the same $ as my previous role. I accept and 1 day later my #1 on the list came through. better title, pay and benefits. The first company is stoked to have me and everyone is nice. I'm sure on the culture. I reached out to company 2 the week before I accepted this offer and they weren't ready, but now they are. They seem great, but so does everyone when you meet them. What do I do?

Need to give notice to my firm tomorrow. Feeling overcome with emotion (guilt, nostalgia, excitement and trepidation). I don't think it will go well because it's a small firm, and I am very close to the partners, but need to move on to achieve career goals (and maintain sanity--I have a great relationship with my colleagues but there is a toxic culture). Truly think that my mentor will see this as a personal betrayal and blow up at me, and I'm sad to burn the bridge. Any words of encouragement?

Considering leaving for another firm job, one year in. Thoughts? New position would be a better practice area fit and would only work with clients in the industry I want. Currently it’s about 60% of what I’d like. Also, current firm seems to be stagnating with low hours to go around. I’m worried about not making hours, missing my bonus, and low professional development. Comparable on prestige & exit options and would be $5k less. Just worried about burning bridges and leaving “too soon.”
