I’m seeing so many graduates from the U.K. advertising schools with LinkedIn resumes full of 1-2 years of ‘Creative Placements’ at the big agencies. Is it really normal to intern for that long?

Yup. I did 18 months. Admittedly I had 3 job offers during my placement ‘circuit’, but I just wanted to work at the best places and learn from the best. I’m all the better for it, so is my portfolio. Don’t get me wrong, It’s brutal and horrible. I once had a placement that was month-by-month. It’s a way of exploiting young talent and paying them nothing, while billing them out as juniors. At my current agency we had a placement team here for 18 months on living wage. No job. They just left. Awful. There’s probs like 30-50 half decent teams at any one time competing for a very limited amount of spots at the top agencies, it’s rough

Nope, you’ll be doing 60+ hour weeks and expected to compete against the other teams in the department It’s very much ‘pick up a shovel and get digging’

I work in the UK but from Australia, it blew me away too that people sit in agencies for that long. Agencies are paying a living wage now, where it used to be nothing. In my experience you have two kinds of placement teams. There are those who jump around so they can say they’ve been at this agency or that agency, which is meaningless. Or you’ve got others who get in somewhere, work there arse off and get hired. But it’s a tough and competitive market, which is why it’s not uncommon for people to intern for a long period of time.

Thanks for the reply! I definitely feel like there’s a level of personal responsibility to it. Once you’ve done your time interning, you’ve gotta be confident knowing your worth, and there comes a time where you really should refuse to do anything less than a full time junior role. However I do really feel for them as it’s so competitive. It seems like an industry wide problem in the U.K - who the hell wants to spend nearly two years as an intern?

It is normal in the UK, the most brutal country to break in. Nothing assures you will get hired, not producing stuff, sometimes not even winning a pro pencil. Seen it. They hire so few people (at A list agencies) that's embarrassingly all about luck.

like

It's sadly really common. Agencies know they can run through placement teams without paying them the same as a Junior team. Some ad schools here have placements built into the curriculum too which accounts for some of it.

Just after reading this I saw a tweet for a junior team role, that asked for "a couple years' agency experience." Hiring is great, but this really highlights the UK's obsession with the placement circuit.

Common in Europe

Yes. 100% normal. Luck plays a factor. You need to be in the room when they need to hire juniors.

Perpetually an intern... working at the same company for 1.5+ years and easily doing the work of a junior creative, & taking the heat off my CDs daily; sometimes I’m the only AD on big jobs. I’m not making a livable wage & I’ve undercut my soul, free time, and financial stability with no end in sight. My teammates always really appreciate my hustle and insights. It makes me wonder what else I could possibly do. Put on more make up? Start poppin adderal? I’m joking... but what would you do?

Completely bombed an interview yesterday, and I’m ok with that. I realized how wildly unprepared I was and how I can make it better for the next ones I have lined up! It’s ok to fail and learn from mistakes. Also my kids were running around in the background so hopefully that wasn’t the reason 🤣
