I’m seeking a promotion from L2 to L3 by EOQ1 2023. I’ve set the expectation over the past year and my manager keeps saying “within the next year,” “within the next year.” By the next promotion cycle, I will have been in this role for a year and a half. I am the most junior on my team but I feel I’m consistently delivering better and faster than my senior colleagues. Not to mention my RSUs are drowning and I’m the most tenured at the company on my team. Tips on navigating this?

Look for a new job that pays more. Loyalty pays lower than just getting a new job.

Have others been promoted on your team? If not, there are likely a few factors. If you’re at a small org, they might be limited in budget and how many promotions they can offer in a cycle or year.

In addition, you mentioned you’re a junior on the team. Do you know for a fact you’re delivering better results than your senior colleagues? That might be hard to compare unless the info is public for your team to do that comparison. It’s never good to assume. You can only vouch for yourself and talk to your experience only. “Jane is not making as many sales as me…” won’t be perceived well. But “I don’t know where I stand in comparison to my colleagues, but I know the value I bring to this org. Here’s how I impact our bottom line” will likely be a better approach. Not saying you’re dragging anyone though. Just an ex.

You also mention being the most tenured, but years at a company don’t often equate to a promotion over less tenured employees.

Have you had a conversation with your manager on specific steps you need to take to get to a promotion? Simply asking is a lot different than actually preparing for a promotion. Employees have to take initiative to show additional responsibilities from there regular jobs duties and accomplish specific tasks along the way.

It seems there’s some disconnect with your manager and you about those steps. Or in short, they’re horrible and you’re fucked or you move on. 🤷🏽‍♂️

What are RSUs?

I accepted a job at an MBB company a month ago, not thinking I’d get the job at Apple I was interviewing for at the same time. Ended up getting the offer, and accepted, so I had to go back to MBB company and tell them the job was no longer right for me. The manger was pretty mad (understandably), and I feel bad doing it, but I have to think about what’s best for my career. I never had interest in MBB, they head-hunted me, whereas Apple was the company I’ve aspired to work for for a long time.

Just had a negotiation end. I am proud of myself though, for valuing my skills. I had a company offer me less money than I’m currently making….and while the role would’ve been great, we are in an era of high inflation and gas prices. I also would’ve been leaving a totally remote role to go to a hybrid role, so I had to factor gas prices in as well. Moral of the story, value yourself and your skills!! And stand your ground even if it’s a very well known company.

I’ve been at my current agency for shy of 4 years & in my current position for over a year. During yearly reviews, I was told my my raise was going to be 17%. Being high bc 4% was for my merit increase & the rest was to put me at “market value.” Before signing any paperwork, I found I out my company had been underpaying me, not even paying me NYS exempt threshold & they owed me back pay. I went to my back to manager & asked for a 27% raise. Should I have asked for more?

I’ve never been in a position to negotiate salary. When I applied, interviewed for this role I’m in now. Our company had a hiring freeze. With this being said I didn’t work with the recruiter the hiring manager did. So I was totally unaware of my pay. Until freeze lifted and I saw it. I at least thought it would be 10% more of my previous salary. I’m not sure how to go about attempted to raise the “bar” I never signed anything or accepted an offer. I just accepted the role. Any insight?

Does PwC offer sign on bonuses in this market? I don’t want my offer rescinded, but my start date is so far into the future I feel like a sign on bonus would keep me motivated for 2 months. Should I counter with one, and for how much? $10k? Senior manager level in IFS. I feel like they’re low-balling my base salary at $135k, so I’m going to counter with a higher amount. The Senior Managers at my current company get way more than that and while we are large, not nearly as large as PwC.
