I’m sending resumes out far and wide, ideally I’d be in a new role ASAP. I’m already starting to get requests for phone screenings so formal interviews will probably be on the way. The kicker is that my wife is 6 months pregnant and our first child is due next February, which is busy season the public accounting jobs I am applying to. I feel like requesting paternity leave or letting them know a baby is coming will make hiring me more difficult. How do I approach this, and when do I do it?

Well, assuming you are in the US, you won’t be eligible for FMLA or most paternity leave programs.

Your best bet will be to wait for an offer and then negotiate for some kind of unpaid leave, alternative work schedule, etc during this that time.

You don’t have to wait to start looking; just be aware of the risks and when you get an offer you are willing to accept try to get some kind of leave negotiated. If your wife has leave for 8-12 weeks, perhaps that means you ask for leave after hers is done - which would be in April/May and might be better for all parties. Or maybe don’t look at public accounting firms right now.

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?

General question, and I suspect the answer is no. Are there any employment or exec comp-related jobs in the entertainment industry? How up front should about be about that history in the interviews?
