If you are starting as an Audit Associate some time from now with Deloitte or any of the big 4, do they expect you to have passed/completed all 4 parts by the time you start? Received the Becker Reimbursement email from the recruiter not too long ago but have yet to start. I’ve seen plenty of people get to Senior at a big 4 firm without the CPA so I am a bit confused in that aspect. Any helpful feedback will be very much appreciated.

That’s terrible. Disengaged and discouraging managers are everywhere. Find a mentor who knows the ropes and will give you the information you need to be successful. Everyone needs someone in their corner who will be honest and open.
Yes that was at the tip of my tongue...”are you saying promotions are just a function of time spent on the job then ?” Problem is, I literally can’t get a word in once he starts talking and then once he has been talking for 20 minutes, he loses interest and does not want to talk at all.
That's a toxic management culture you're dealing with. Best to start talking to a shrink now.
I feel shell shocked. To the point that I can’t even place a finger on everything that is bothering me right now. Yes I feel invalidated. But still working through my other feelings

It sounds like you need to find a different team. I'm familiar with the career trajectory you're describing, and you are absolutely being gaslighted and not even with any subtlety/skill, and I'm sorry this happened to you. You're not going to change your boss's character anytime soon or work around him since he's in charge.
Have some convos with people you trust at your company. Maybe there's something going on affecting everyone this year, which could help give some context, but regardless of the situation, the fact that your boss spoke to you that way and couldn't handle it with more tact is a problem that isn't going away.

Also good reminder when searching for new job- your manager defines your career more than the company. Choose wisely. Bad manager, bad experience. If you find a good one, follow them anywhere.

Yes, promotion is business needs based, my guess is that the business doesn’t have that need atm.
Our promotions are not business needs driven at lower levels. We grow quickly from analyst to associate to principal to senior principal. Growth after that is business needs based.
I agree with most of the other comments, but here are three possible explanations:
1. He thinks you need to work on the fundamentals of your current role before taking on more. Some of the tone of what you shared hints at this.
2. You’re coming off as not a team player in an environment where that matters. Giving you more responsibility may serve your own ambition in the short run without advancing bigger goals or might handicap your team.
3. Politics. This is pure speculation from what you shared, but someone else may be up for promotion already who has been waiting longer, you might be seen as a favorite who is already favored in some way, he may be worried about losing/sharing your time with other managers, etc.
4. Agree it very well may be gaslighting. I’ve run into this myself in the past and I assure you the only reasonable solution is to switch teams as fast as possible.

Most managers won’t tell you 1 or 2. Its only gotten worse. One thing to consider - don’t bring up getting a promotion. Make it about growing and contributing. Baby steps. For now, deal with your feelings, start fresh next week, don’t ask about more responsibilities, but step up any time you can. Meanwhile find a mentor and new opportunities.
You need to practice what I call work/career balance. Check the attached fro HRB. Work on your future self...I don’t think your manager can help you so you may need to look outside your organization- classes or a new company

Did you ask for any explicit feedback on how you could get to where you want to go? I don't think anyone here can really speak to what your manager is saying without knowing more about what you asked and exactly how the manager responded / what they said.
Im really sorry that it's so discouraging and I've been there, but there's usual a reason underlying whatever not so positive reaction you've received at work.

Do you cover a specific sector? Maybe try asking to pick up a different sector/asset class? Buy side has a lot of pigeonhole managers who watch their underlyings pigeonhole further in order to secure their position, talk to your peers to see what they do, read job description of other firms to see if any skill is missing. And go back to him “I think xxx maybe extremely helpful if our team can pick up that capacity, if you think that’s helpful I can devise an example”.
Just had the opposite discussion with my coachee. Said I want to give you more responsibility and start to push on your comfort zone. The foundation has been laid, let’s start building on top of it. Gotta embrace the discomfort to get ahead.
