I’ve heard this is helpful:
I share these exact sentiments. You’re not alone!
From friends and family. I’m so tired of even when I’m not in an office working having to be somewhere I don’t want to be. Everyone else on my team just seems resigned to this lifestyle, but I hate it. I’m trying to get out but I’m just so frustrated.
I’ve had acute DGAF for the last four years however, it became chronic within the last 18 months. I am now trying to keep a low profile and looking for an exit.
I was in this position, so I left and came to Slalom! Best decision I’ve ever made - still get to do consulting work I enjoy, actually have more options as I was previously silo-d into a particular industry, got a pay bump, AND no travel. All around win!
So there is a portion of Slalom consultants who travel, in a different segment of the company that I am in, so I’ll start with that disclaimer.
All of our clients are within are 40-ish mile radius of the office. Staffing takes into consideration your home address as well - say, if you live north of the city/office, you’re unlikely to be staffed far south of the city - of course, this is not always the case, but the effort is made and I’ve always seen it to generally be true.
Projects can range from a small local retailer to a large fortune 50 company. Projects range cross industry as well, so while cities tend to have heavy representation of certain industries, there’s no alignment within Slalom for consultants. One month you could be on a retail project, next month could be at a life sciences org.
Work ranges from pure strategy, to tech implementations, change management services, to yes, some staff aug (note: some offices do very little staff aug, some do more).
Last but not least, every market is different. Slalom can be likened to a franchise - yes, we have a national headquarters and follow guidelines put forth by them, but each office operates with their own individuality, so what can be said about one may be different than another
I hear ya. Working on my exit strategy now as well. Options I have still require travel but will be work I enjoy doing which is more important.
Contractor role. Lots of risk, but more upside.
The DGAF is particularly rampant at this time of year.
Usually clears up a bit by spring
