I’m so stressed out. I haven’t been here very long (about 15 months), and my wife is expecting our second baby this winter. I’ve been having issues with my managers for the past few months, and I feel like it’s just a matter of time before I’m gone. I want to look for a new job, but I’m afraid it will be an impossible time to get hired elsewhere. Anyone got any advice for getting a new role as a finance engineer?

Hi if you see something at Wells Fargo let me know and I can refer you internally! It is coming up on hiring free time so I would make your moves very quietly internally at your work.

Thank you so much. I will take a look! That's good advice--I'm worried about losing this job before I can secure another one but trying to have a positive outlook!

I'm not sure of budget cycles for banking, but if you're approaching the beginning of a new cycle, roles are approved and posted.
Usually the end of the calendar year/ beginning of a new year are the best times to look for a new job.

Ok, that makes sense! Thanks so much. :)

What were the issues with your managers?

like

Thanks for that honest and helpful feedback. You're probably right. Talking to my manager might help me know whether or not my fears are founded. I know I'm not on the most solid ground mentally/emotionally right now, so you might be absolutely right. Thanks!

I think this is the right time to look tbh, because of budgets. I would just keep applying and maybe network with some headhunters to see what kind of roles are coming to them

helpful

Oh, that's a great idea! I wonder what the best way to network with headhunters is. I've never had to do that before. This is only my second FA job, which is probably why I'm so anxious about the worst-case scenarios. Any advice on networking?

Hey I’ve been in almost that exact situation and it’s awful. I wasn’t sleeping and due to the stress wasn’t getting any satisfaction from work while worrying about providing for growing family. My suggestion is two fold - start looking and reaching out 2. Get a good night of sleep or two, that impacts so much mentally.
I started applying after about 4 months in a high stress no win job and it took a good 2 months but once I got traction I got 3 offers the same day and I took a step back which eventually pushed me way forward. Feel free to message me.

helpful

That's a great idea, thank you. I'm sure that even a really great nap would work wonders for both of us! I knew that having kids would be challenging, but I don't think I was prepared for the level of sleep deprivation & the strain it has put on our relationship. I know it'll improve eventually, but we are in the thick of it right now.

Does spouse pregnancy create some buffer for you from a HR standpoint?

like

Perhaps. I'll have to talk to HR and see what they say about that. Thanks for that thought!

You don't know unless you try. Don't let your fear stop you from getting the career of your dreams. Just apply and see what's out there.

Anything is possible. Why do you think it is not? And how many managers do you have?

My role was just eliminated, and I need to replace it quickly. I have a solid lead on a new job but based on the job description I think it’s gonna be a lot less than I was making. I’ve seen people on one of the bowls mention working 2 full time jobs, like in different time zones or countries. Does anyone have any concrete advice on how to start that process? Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

I’m leaving biglaw after 3.5 years. The people in my group are fine but never developed a strong bond with anyone including partners (I will be pushed out sooner or later). Also I don’t really like the work (deals and fund investments). Moving to a much smaller firm with slightly lower billable target that pays market. I will be doing more interesting work, in a smaller group where partners seem to care about my growth. God I hope this is a right move.. any advice would be much appreciated.

This is more relevant for when we were traveling, but do you tend to view coworkers or leaders who physically active / in shape as more disciplined or have a stronger work ethic than those who aren’t? I know for me that the times in my life where I have been in great shape, I was also really disciplined and excelling at work. And the times where I haven’t been in as great shape, I was also generally less motivated and disciplined. I’m also impressed when I’d see a partner in the gym (cont.)
