In the same position I think. Title is senior and I’m expected to lead which feels really unnatural since I’m used to being in an IC role. Wake up every day including weekends worried I’m not qualified to do my job. I don’t really have advice but it might help you to know others are struggling too haha. Keep at it, hopefully one day we grow into these roles
Thank you!
In addition, speak with other managers in the firm to ask how they made the transition. Some of the expectations are that you will plan oversee activities across workstrems, delegate and manage to get quality work out of your team members. It will help if you make a daily priority list and get organized, what are the actions, risks, dependencies, etc.
I do tech implementations and the way our projects are staffed are such that there is an Architect, Lead, and Support (ordered in most experience to least). I was staffed as a Lead with no prior experience and the architect quit midway through the project, and no replacement bc we were short-staffed. I felt exactly like you where I woke everyday very anxious. The project has since ended and I would say that the way it went definitely caught the eye of my superiors. The client never once asked where the architect was during the duration of the project They really threw me in the deep end but I learned a lot from it. It’ll be a tough time while you’re there but know that once it’s over you’re going to have learned A LOT! And like others have said; you probably wouldn’t be there if someone didn’t think you could do it.
Hi! First congrats :) people believe in you.
I tend to think that if you’re given the responsibilities it’s because your partner/ TM/ team are convinced you can do it and sometimes people stress while they are actually already at the expected level. What could help is having feedbacks to understand if you’re « over stressing » / trying to do too much. Did you get any feedback from your partner / manager? Can you talk to them or to your CA, asking for advice and tips? Another option would be to talk to an associate friend. Feel free to DM me if you want!
Yes i second this! Especially the daily update emails (including next steps) helped me a lot.
What OW1 said. You’re in the role because people believe you can do it.
It’s worth checking in with your manager/principal/partner regularly to ensure that you’re aligned on what’s required so that you have time to course correct if needed.
And with your CDA so that they’re aware of what you’re going through so that they could offer you some advice.
Good luck!
All I can say, it gets better. I know how you feel! I have lived it multiple times... Not just once! Every time I got a new responsibility which pushed me to get out of my comfort zone bought stress and anxiety! I depended a lot on other managers for feedback, I also used to talk to my team and have open discussions. One of my favorite ways to open such discussions is, I want to get better at managing the team, do you have some feedback to suggestions? Also, enjoy this transition knowing all will be well! You will learn skills which are important for your growth... and congratulations!
Just adding here how nice it is to see other OWs chipping in to help a junior.
How did you manage the transition and how to be a good manager?
Good luck - I have been in a similar position and it turned put to be one of my favorite projects! I sent daily update emails and had a 30min chat with the partner every other day (in the morning at 8, he was driving and these typically don’t get cancelled)
I also fully leveraged my quite new consultant to jointly solve problems, they are quite smart after all and come up with great refinements to steerco storylines etc if you bring them on board
Dm me if you need to chat
