I’m starting a new solo firm. Boutique estate planning with WealthCounsel. How do I handle feeling like I’m never going to get clients?

Strong marketing methods are a big start. Do you have marketing set up to bring new clients? Off the top of my head you want to:

- Create website
- Register for referral service with local bar association in estates practice
- inform prior clients via letter of your branching out into advising in this practice area
- Google ads ($2-4 per click on your site)
- announce on social media
- post helpful tips re: estates practice regularly on LinkedIn
- talk to other attorneys you know to start up referral bases.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful advice! I am ready to lunch website, Facebook page, and google ads. I’m sure the nerves will ease up after a few potential client calls.

I'd say get used to the feeling. The work is on your shoulders now and until you have a pretty self-sustaining pipeline I can't imagine the nerves going away.

I started a solo estate planning firm in November and I will say that 90% of my clients since going solo have been friends and parents of my kid's friends. The other 10% came from financial advisors I had solid relationships with prior to launch.

I don't plan on paying for advertising this year. As a solo you only have so much time. My focus is polishing my website and social media content. I personally think that regurgitating the same content that every law firm posts on LinkedIn is a waste of time. Connect your content to you and your practice philosophy (or your Why if your a Simon Sinek fan).

Thank you! Best of luck in your endeavors!

Hi everyone, I just finished my masters degree a few weeks ago, and I’m looking for a new role. I obtained a bachelors degree in 2011 however that school closed and did not share records with WV higher education comission, neither are they at student clearinghouse. The school was accredited, during my time then lost accreditation a year after. (Mountain State University). Can anyone recommend how to handle this with HR if they can’t verify one of my degrees? Thank you!

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

Back when the pandemic first hit, everybody at the firm took a 20% pay cut (with 20% reduction in billables...which was meaningless because I still had work to get done in a timely manner).
