I’m starting MBA night classes soon. I know it’ll pay off but I’m getting exhausted just thinking about having no real downtime. Any tips for balancing night classes with a day job?

1. gotta get organized on scheduling, I was keeping my calendar out 3 months when working my MBA. 2. MBA unlike other degrees is primarily about your peers in the room, get a core group and use them to get you through harder classes and group projects. Pick a good group because 10 years from now you will still be calling in favors from each other. Helping each other get work or roles etc. I can’t undersell the networking benefit of an MBA

If your work experience doesn’t match your education don’t get an MBA. I completed my MBA and was still stuck in my regular job. Some employers may shy around hiring you if you have more education than your supervisor. I would encourage not getting one. It’s a bunch of business and finance classes that you will never use in the real world.

To EY point. Ask why you’re getting it? If you’re in the business world and it’s not from a top school, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. I’m in science with a PhD from a T15 school so that Carrie’s my weight, but an MBA is expected to move up and no one cares where it’s from. I’m getting my MBA online (to continue military continuity) and no one will bat an eye in my field.

Always ask yourself why before doing.

Are you sure it will pay off?

I did the same over covid. Burn through your assignments as fast as possible imo. Dedicate entire nights to whole weeks worth of work. Ended up saving my sanity.

I also kind of think I’d you are getting an MBA where you have to work hard it’s probably not the type of MBA that will help. But in terms of balance just do enough to pass - no one cares about MBA grades

I did my masters online. Allowed me to do my homework and lessons when I had time instead of sucking up my entire evenings sitting in a classroom away from my family.

Map your week and which assignment needs to get completed that day. Time management is the name of the game. It’s not that bad.

I’m 5 classes from finishing and worked the entire time. I was also in the Air Force reserves until the last month. It’s been an exhausting two years to say the least.

You can create your own downtime by prioritizing times to do school work. I do a lot during the weekday and sundays so I can have downtime Saturday. Do not procrastinate! If something is due next week start on it now. Prioritize certain times and days to just school and stick to it the best you can.

If online classes are an option, you could consider that

That’s a fair assessment

Don’t think, just do. It will be difficult at times but it will also be fun building new networks and developing new friends.

I got my MBA but because my bachelors wasn't in my current career background and am now leveraging it to get into a doctorate program. Just look at your path and make sure it makes sense for you.

Remember, this is just temporary. Keep that in mind, keep the goal in mind and you’ll get through it. Do everything else you can if it all possible to get enough sleep because you’re going to need it.

Just put your brain in deployment mode for 2 years- one foot in front of the other keep going and all of a sudden it’s over.

It’s as bad as you make it. I did full time on top of a director level role. If you’re committed to getting the degree, think of the time spent as an opportunity rather than exhausting or a negative thing.

Definitely get a planner or something similar whether it be on your phone or on paper to help keep track of assignments. I recommend writing all them out once get the syllabus so don’t miss anything (not sure how many you are taking at a time, I did a full course load when I got my Masters and worked full time).

Depending on how many classes you are doing, try to make a plan on which days you devote studying/assignments to each class if doing more than one. This helped me focus on completing each assignment and not hitting too much information overload. If you’re someone that learns better by hearing, see if your professor will allow to voice record the lecture to go back and listen later (i know some don’t).

It’ll be a grind definitely but worth it in the end. Also be sure to have fun in there every now and then. Go out with family and friends to enjoy a break when you can. You got it!

This is going to be iffy but do the bare minimum for a B. This is what I did while working and getting my bachelors.

Time management is critical, but that has been touched on so I won't go into detail.

What hasn't been discussed: setting expectations and boundaries at work with peers. Make sure everyone knows you're going to be doing your MBA and have the schedule blocked off on your calendar, including studying times. Even if they wouldn't schedule that late in the day, they'll still see it when scheduling with you and remind them you're doing the MBA and may not be as available for last minute "plz fix" support.

I did it before I had kids. No chance I would be able to balance it now.

I took classes two nights week (three nights one semester, I do not recommend) and dedicated every Saturday and some Sunday afternoons to studying.

I spent 7 of my last years in the army doing classes online and in person at night. It’s tiring and can be very hard to balance out your life. Make sure to have a schedule, get organized with calendars/reminders/alarms w.e. Works for you. Build in time and days to relax or catch up with family. Gotta be discipline to your own mental health.

It is not easy, but it will be worth it. I would do it all over again if I had to.

Have any of you approached your employer for reimbursement for being asked to use your phone at work? Specifically things like texting your boss while they are in court? I started a new job and am trying to set boundaries but this is one that I cannot set as it is standard practice. In our state, an employer must reimburse you if they direct you to use your personal phone for work. It seems petty, but I’m trying to (rightfully) cash in on something that I would rather not have to do.

Hey everyone. I had a conversation with a friend of me about what is the better approach:
Click apply on LinkedIn without even reading the job description.
Or
Read the job descriptions and detailsod the work before applying before applying.
The first approach is not time consuming maybe you have to apply to 100 where 1 might be suitable.
The second approach requires you to read 100 job descriptions where you apply to 10 and 1 will be suitable.
What are your thoughts?
