I’m starting my first job next month and the firm still hasn’t told me which section I’ll be in. It’s driving me crazy! I asked the recruiting director on Monday and he just hasn’t responded to my email. The not knowing is giving me anxiety. Is this normal??
Does your firm always assign first years to a section right away? The firms I’ve worked at (granted, only 2) purposely don’t assign first years to a particular group until well into their first year and after they’ve had a chance to take on a variety of assignments to make sure the first year and the group think it’s a good match and there’s work available. The first year may express an interest in a particular area (litigation, corporate, tax, etc.), and they may even be “penciled in” to work with that group, but they won’t be formally assigned.
Also, considering so many biglaw starting associates have had their start dates deferred for months, this may be a suck it up moment. With the economy and legal market the way it is, the firm probably wants some flexibility because not all groups have work available.
Very true! I completely agree and am so grateful to have a job. It just feels a little crappy to not know what’s going on. The other summers from last year were given offers for specific practice groups, and I was the only one left up in the air.
Are you at a non-big law firm ? If yes, Board meetings are generally at the end of the month (this week) if you don’t hear anything by early next week, I think it is ok to follow up.

OP, take a deep breath. You have no idea how many higher priorities your firm has than this question. Enjoy your time off and forget about your job. You’ll find out soon enough.
Yes it is normal, go grab a beer or a glass of wine. They are probably extremely busy and keeping you updated is low priority. Go enjoy the remaining summer weather and enjoy time with family and friends before you are chained to your desk 😆
I'm speaking from experience since I just started at a new firm where I didn't hear from them and I started thinking that maybe they would rescind their offer because COVID after I had quit my job and turned down COBRA insurance. Turns out they were/are just extremely busy. Wish I would have worried less and enjoyed my time off more

The best lesson you can take going into this job is that your employment is to serve the needs of the firm. That is it. Anytime you feel frustration consider this maxim and act accordingly. Not saying it’s fair it’s just the way it is.

^This. Perfectly stated.

You start next month so the firm will likely respond in 10-14 days. They know you have taken the job and the answer to your question is not urgent nor determinative. Youll work there no matter where you assigned. Also, they may still be figuring it out..,,during covid, its hard to have board or partner meetings...
