You can pay rent to your parents and so show their PAN details..but your parents must include this as an income.. so if you parents are retired etc this will work out.

My dad is the owner of the house, my mom is not currently. Can I still pay rent to her for this purpose?
Or is a lease deed absolutely mandatory in this case?
Here's what you can do
-Claim below 100,000 i.e. 8333 per month and only provide address of the house (does not require PAN)
-Claim more than that, as employee can claim HRA by paying rent to parents. Provide PAN number and ask them to show it as income. In case if it s jointly owned property, show your mother's PAN, and in case if she is non working then there wouldn't be any tax implication on her.
Yes, that's true present rent agreement if you want it included in F16 or add directly on ITR site
its officially ok to pay Rent to Dad...... you can check online... Its acceptable legally

One question here - if you guys are paying rent to your parents to the tune of 15K or more, do you transfer it through IMPS and then have it withdrawn at a later time as well? Or is it that you actually pay rent to your parents (pay them 15K and never take it back)?

If rent is above 1L then IMPS/Bank transfer is required as the pan details (mandatory for rent above 1L) of the parents will be captured in HRA and the parent to whom you are paying the rent will have to show this income in his/her ITR.
And it cannot be that the parent is showing an income from rent without even receiving any rent in any of his bank accounts. (As all bank accounts are linked to your PAN).
