I’m struggling mentally and it’s affecting my performance at work. I’d like to let my manager know, both to protect myself if/when I fail massively and for support. However, I’m concerned she might be unsympathetic since mental health is personal. What’s the best way to frame this to a manager? For reference, I’m considered a high performer and have more direct reports than anyone at my level…but I feel it slipping away quickly and am concerned I’ll burn a bridge before ringing the alarm.

Activate your support network - tell a friend, find a therapist if you don’t have one, and then talk to a senior person at work who can help you frame the message.

Does your job offer an employee assistance program or hotline? These are usually free of costs and depending on your state, you can get at least a few calls to discuss with them and get professional feedback before deciding to disclose to your manager. If no, there are other hotlines to call. If you need to eventually share some of your mental health, that person should be professional enough to understand and should work with you as needed. Or contact your hr dept as well. 👍🏾

I’m in a similar situation and looking for advice. I do have a therapist but I notice that the two responses above suggest reaching out to someone other than the manager. Is there a reason for that? Personally, I am having a hard time and want to disclose minimal information before my reputation is heavily damaged - and my manager seems like the best person to raise this to.

@author can you share how you navigated this?

I felt so confident in applying. The recruiter called a week later and said the hiring manager was extremely impressed with my resume. The first “interview” (informal meet and greet) went great and I was told I’m definitely moving on to the formal panel interview. I reached out to the recruiter with a happy “just following up” email on Friday afternoon and she said the coordinator should be in touch by Monday at the latest. No email came. Talk me off ledge. Confidence plummeting.

Can someone please refer me to PWC? Dm me for more details. Thanks!

Additional Posts in Depression/Anxiety Talk

I just have to say that signing up for therapy (and finding my current therapist) was one of the best decisions I made in my life. I’m learning a lot about myself and how to live a happier life. I wish people could learn about these things without therapy. And I wish more people would be able to take advantage of counseling.

A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. To those stressed about relationships, relationships are hard even for non-lawyers, but you are absolutely worthy of love. It is an important reminder for all of us that you are worthy and you are valuable. Keep fighting!
