Start with the basics, teach them step by step what you what them to do and how to do it. Use lots of verbal praise for even small progress. Treat it as a lesson. They might have never been taught how to behave or classroom procedures. So many times we as educators assume that students come into our classes knowing what to do and how to behave, but not all students do or they need more than just a quick review. You’ve got this, good luck!
I agree. Also, if you think about it, 2nd graders have had very little experience navigating a traditional classroom due to this global pandemic.
Kids do best with consistency, predictability, clear expectations (throughout the day), time for whole class movement, sense of community and sense of safety, choice when appropriate, and lots of safe opportunities to practice. Good luck and yes, you’ve got this!
Agree! All kids do need this, but it’s even more valuable to little ones who do not have that frame of reference to draw from.
