Yes I have! That is exactly the position I was in 4 years ago. I ultimately switched agencies and just joined as a producer and that kind of set me off on the producer-only track. I’m a freelance producer now for tech orgs and creative shops.
Would you consider leaving?
I’m currently making $75k. I’ve been doing the one man band/small crew type productions for about 6 years now. Good to know what mid level producer ranges are, thank you. I’m never sure where to price my skill range because I’m sort of a master of none. I’m confident enough in my producing skills that whatever I don’t know I believe I could learn pretty quickly. The skills I think I’d need to improve on are budgeting/estimating projects. Most projects I’ve worked on have been under ~$100k (includes creative & pre through post). Also, when looking at producer job postings I always see requirements for knowledge of working with SAG/Union of which I have very little know how from the producer end of things. From my experience I’ve learned producing seems to rely heavily on good problem solving skills and the ability to assemble the right team together to execute on a project. All of which I believe I can do.
Sadly, you’ll have to leave to make that move. Agencies tend to see you as ‘a Swiss Army knife’ and frankly start to rely on you pulling rabbits out of your hat for new biz sizzles to those budget challenged efforts. Go be an AP somewhere, grind it out producing radio spots or lower tier film work and start the climb.
Switch agencies!
Your strength is a weakness to your employer (unless they see the value you’re offering). Take your skills elsewhere and increase your salary. Make it clear you want to grow but you’re willing to do whatever you need to succeed. I’d suggest looking for AP or Creative Producer roles.
Thank you. That’s what I’m starting to learn. My employer has been all talk about how much they value me but have yet to show me through any sort of salary increase. I know I really just need sit down with my boss any make my case.
Have you told your manager about your career goals?
I made it clear in my last quarterly check in what my goals were. They were very receptive but then just the other day during a team meeting they mention they’re going to hire another Producer.
Why not make a plan with your manager? It could include training a hire on some of your current responsibilities as you take on different ones? And potentially a pay bump? Seems worth the conversation before you go through the hassle of switching shops.
