You’re doing great!! Everyone makes mistakes!! Don’t give up!!

I am terrible at details which is why I’m thinking I’m not suitable for this trade mister 🥲

Hey there’s a lot of us and together we are one competent associate

funny

It’s probably not the right job for you. Despite what others will tell you, biglaw isn’t for everyone. Making mistakes as a junior is normal, but making mistakes in everything you do (aside from things you just missed because you’re a junior and don’t know any better) is not. If your team is clearly reacting negatively, it means that the mistakes you’re making go beyond the kinds of mistakes expected from a junior.

Attention to detail doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Definitely try to improve, but if you’ve been trying hard for a while and are not getting anywhere with your efforts, consider whether there is something else that you would enjoy more and is also a better fit (based on your personality, talent, etc).

Are there any legal jobs that don’t require attention to details? I invested so much in this career and I am also getting worried about this.

Same. Let’s commiserate.

🤗 we will get through this. One way or another.

Sounds like it’s time to talk to a therapist. You might not be as bad as you think and it sounds like you have some distorted thinking.

like

I’m sure you are great 👍🏻 because you still get staffed! I don’t get staffed for months but still drag my body into office everyday and not feel guilty.

like

@A4 I think it’s a sign that they think I am incapable and not a good fit.
I am still dragging myself to the office because the market is very bad to lateral.

Do you think you are getting less work because of this?

Can you give some examples? It may not be as bad as you think.

Everyone at every level makes mistakes. The ones that stick around long enough are the ones that are able to not let it get to them and move on. Try to learn from them, but don’t beat yourself up too much.

Mistaken reply here

Learned helplessness and burn out. Talk to a career coach and get your confidence back

You won’t stop making mistakes as a mid/senior. Just accept that mistakes will be part of the experience. Try to minimize them and learn from past mistakes.

I am a senior associate and still make mistakes

I would say over 10 people have stopped me to ask about them or comment on them and I've been at work for maybe 2 1/2 hours. It's all been positive, but am I wrong for still finding it annoying? They don't lose their minds when Sarah gets bangs or whatever so I wish they could keep that same energy.

Has anyone else had a mentor (assigned to them by the Company) who seemed to have it out for you? I mean downright sabotage to make you look bad left and right. I didn’t realize it at first. She was fake friendly, but she was discrete too. Some of the executives thought she was amazing, but I had to clean up her work all the time. She wasn’t above me either on the chain of command. Later I found out she had tried for the exec assistant role and they didn’t choose her, they wanted me instead.

Throughout our legal careers, we’re told to reach out to the partner (or mid/senior assoc if available) if we have questions.

I’m a second year L&E lit associate and the partner wants us running point on all our cases. However, he literally never responds to questions I have on case handling/strategy, and is super vague when he does answer questions

Is this normal? If so, aside from just badgering him (which annoys him), what can I do?
