I’m surprised to see so many open HR roles that require the hire to work on-site versus hybrid or remote. You’d think that after two years of the pandemic, companies would get on board and see how unnecessary it is for HR professionals to perform their jobs fully in person.

To be fair, it’s not always possible for HR to be remote. As the sole HR for a manufacturing plant, there’s literally no way my position could be remote. I feel like it’s very dependent on not just the company, but the type of industry and internal customers you serve.

I've been in HR for over 20 years and although some of my job can be done remotely, working in an industry that is face to face, it is necessary for me to be in the office to adequately interact with the internal customers base. Yes, a day or 2 sometimes works, but being completely remote would not work for me.

I agree, if employees are working remotely, why force HR to be in office

like

This is an interesting observation. IMO, I think HR should work from where the employees are located. If everyone is remote, the role should be remote, and if everyone is onsite, HR should be onsite.

I don’t think there’s any one answer that is correct. I think you have to take a multitude of factors in to consideration to find the best solution that fits your business.

I think remote work with the option of coming into the office to work out of shared/drop in space might be the better option. HR is one of those roles that can be done fully remotely and I think organizations that don’t support that flexibility might lose some top talent down the line….

I agree, working in a manufacturing facility, I am required to be on site all the time. Some functions of human resources, like payroll, could be done remotely, but employee relations and general support must occur or be handled in person.

Exactly. We run 24/7 with 3 shifts. I have to make sure that I am serving ALL of our internal customers at all times, so an on-site presence is crucial for our non wired group.

Thanks for weighing in everyone. I’ve been at working remotely in HR for the past 3 years and am very successful but I serve the entire US. I agree that it depends on the company type, how and where your clients work and what your role entails

Are all your files stored electronically? Not only do I have paper employee files, I am also responsible for our DOT compliance and all of our driver files are paper. We're looking to digitize both this year. Working remotely for the last 2 months is driving me crazy because I keep having to run into the office to pull a file for information. Also wondering how you handle mail - unemployment requests, STD approvals, WC claim information, currently all that is physically mailed to the office. I don't see how my office could be remote 100% of the time, without having someone physically at the location to forward things to me. I work for a auto manufacturing/repair company. All corporate employees are temporarily remote but obviously our shop guys have to be in-person.

We are remote and handle onboarding and Ops for all of the Americas. Our small team is in the US but we help people anywhere in North and South America, so being remote just works. Plus as someone with ADHD, I'm way more productive at home. I can't imagine working from an office again and refuse to work anywhere that doesn't support that now.

I agree. I worked in onboarding and just moved to program management for campus. I don't see a need to be in the office as I'm way more productive and my mental health is cared for as well. Zoom works perfectly and phone conversations as needed.

I couldn't agree more.

It is not that straightforward, I believe working from home currently works well due to the strong bonds established prior to the pandemic. IMO, the office will still play an important role in the future, that’s why I am advocating for a hybrid approach, full flexibility but in proximity to an office, we call it own the way you work and have made extremely positive experiences with it even prior to the pandemic

I'm a bit on both sides. I can see why you would need to and why you wouldn't. There's a difference with HR being able to handle the workload in the office and remotely

Every company works differently and every employee has different needs... I think after 2 years remote I personally like the hybrid model

like

IMO hybrid is the way forward, yes working remotely has its advantages but so does beiung in the office. My firm is giving us flex to work a hybrid model and my team are doing 2 or 3 days in and 2/3 days at home. Its the best of both worlds i think.

I have actually been super shocked to see the opposite - I can't seem to find any roles that ARE NOT remote.
