I’m terrible with year end reviews because I find it incredibly awkward to talk about my achievements. But I know this stuff is documented and will serve me well when Im eventually ready for a promotion… Any advice on tackling this mental hurdle? I think I just need to find a way to phrase both my positives and challenges from the year in a way that’s more natural

I would say to document it along the way and potentially bucket the achievements into 2-3 categories.

Prepare and say it out loud (record yourself if you need to) multiple times before you jump into your meeting. This way it will sound more natural rather than saying it aloud for the first time. Beyond that - back yourself!

No one is going to be your biggest champion but yourself

I keep a “brag book” of on-going projects, achievements, “extra” work that I update anytime I receive positive feedback. I’m revenue generating so most of my job has pretty clear performance metrics, but I add a lot of value for special projects, mentoring, etc. and my leadership should be aware.

My manager slacks me that someone shared positive feedback? Screenshot it and date it in my brag book. Anytime anything is said or put in writing that I find out about, I track it. Then I have a ton of content to use for my quarterly reviews throughout the year.

Unfortunately, the people that get the furthest are the ones that can make what they do sound a lot more amazing than it actually is. And they say these things to the right people. Have confidence. You work hard and you deserve what they give you and more. You don't owe them anything and don't let them make you believe otherwise! Look at work as something that is transactional, you do work and get paid and that's the deal, literally the contract. Any more than that and it isn't required, you are giving them extra. So you deserve more. Don't be arrogant but also don't be afraid of stating what you have done. Don't lie but also be passionate about how you bring value to the business! Good luck 👍

As a part of my weekly 1:1s with my team I always start off by asking them what their 'win of the week' is. I noticed that at first it was hard for them to think of things because they weren't used to or weren't comfortable celebrating their accomplishments but as time has gone on, they've started to share their 'wins' without me even having to prompt them. This gives me a lot more insight into the kind of work they're doing and also makes performance evals so much easier.

Not saying you have to start doing this with your manager but it could be a good thing for you to create a document where every week you go in and and put 1-2 things you're proud of accomplishing/making progress on just to get used to acknowledging the good work you're doing. Then when it's time for yearly reviews you already have a huge list to pull from

I hate when they actually make me write the year up because my raise and bonus have already been decided and there is nothing I can say to change what I will receive.

I had a boss once, no longer on his team, that didn't require me to do anything my review was short he gave a rating (when SAP still rated us) raise amount, and maybe the bonus amount (but I think I got that closer to payout) it was wonderful.

I had an employee once make a portfolio every year of what they accomplished and gave it to me. I will say when you manage a lot of people, you’re not going to remember everyone’s accomplishments. It’s just human nature. Doing this always kept them at the top of my mind as an achiever during r&r

If you do not spend time documenting a comprehensive Year End performance, no one will do it for you. Add critical work done, how it impacts your company bottom line. Ask references to document the work you did. List training you received and training you want to take. Look for boiler plate templates to guide you to put your review.

So I use reflection questions with my team to get them thinking.
1. What are your most important contributions and accomplishments so far?
2. What would you say went well and why?
3. Is there anything you feel that you could have done better?
4. What have been your biggest challenges?
5. How did you overcome these?
6. What could have helped you perform even better this quarter?

I started to use "we" in sentences trying to stop it. I have a hard time bragging but saying we did this and this and this it came more naturally and managers sometimes think I do it to be inclusive and have them take credit too. Little do they know that I have trouble saying: "I did this I me myself alone did this!"

Advice needed:

I am working on a 3y local contract in the US since 2.5y - long-story, but wife never made it over and now wants me to come home.

I am responsible for a major strategic product and CEO really wants to keep me (incl promotion). I can transfer back, but wouldn’t be guaranteed a job at same level. I expect better opportunities, if my CEO would push for me, but don’t know how to ask him, given that he has a conflicting interest.

How would you ask? Or just apply for jobs at home?
