In the market for my 1st entry-level luxury watch, would like a somewhat known brand (as opposed to NTH or Lorier etc), what do people think of this watch from Longines at $1100?

Hmm, the numerals and the date window seem unbalanced in that one. I like the Legend Diver from Longines. It has nice heritage, a retro super compressor design, and an internal rotating bezel. Two sizes, either 42mm or a classic 36mm. If you like a more typical dive watch with a rotating outer bezel, I highly recommend Oris, either the Aquis or the Divers Sixty Five. Oris is a Swiss watchmaker and very respectable.

like

I feel you. The date at 4:00 is to comply with new ISO DIVER specifications requiring a lime pip at every incide. I love it, but it’s controversial and most people don’t.

I second the Oris recommendation. They are spectacular as a brand and their designs are flawless in my opinion.

like

That was my first luxury watch. Not everyone will like your watches so if you like it ignore the rest.

like

Still love it even though it’s become one of my less expensive in the stable.

I’m not a fan of this series of divers. Just my personal taste.

If I’m dropping $1k plus on a Longines diver, I’m going for the Legend. Much more history, MUCH more versatile design. Can be worn with a suit. A timeless classic.

Same reco! This is a great watch. Just love its design.

like

Or if that’s not your taste, the SPB143 (last post I swear) . They also make one with a beautiful blue dial

Longines is a great entry point as a brand, but I’m also not a huge fan of this particular watch.

Their Zulu time is a sweet option

like

I feel like it looks like a fashion watch. Like an Invicta or Michael Kors or something in that range

like

Personally would stick to something around $500 and then make your next watch around the $3k range. Lots of value there as opposed to the $1k range.

like

At the price range, watches like Longines and Hamilton are workhorses that won’t disappoint in my opinion. Just stay away from any high fashion brands.

like

I think it’s extremely hard to beat the value in the Hydroconquest line.

I’d personally choose the newer iteration though with a ceramic bezel and less busy indices.

The other benefit to going with a brand like Longines is there is less risk with regard to things like warranty and service compared to micro brands

like

I think the blue is too blue and the numbers on both the bezel and dial are too big.

But it’s really only your own opinion that matters.

Lmao Tag is not a Rolex in that metaphor. Most people don’t hold Tag in high regard… some of the Carrera’s are quality, but that’s about it

like

Imo that $1000-2000 range of new watches sits in an awkward area that isn’t worth it. I’d see if you can double your budget and get into used Seamaster territory if you want a diver

like

Personally I’d spend just a little bit more and get an Oris Aquis.
Much better looking watch IMO, and I think a bit better constructed. Lots of cool dial color / material options there.

like

Longines will always be one of the best brands to have in your collection when you compare the history of the brand and quality of the product to their prices.

like

As someone else said, the Oris Aquis is the no brainer at this price point. Slightly more expensive but you can get it around 1600 in the grey market (new movement is around 3K). Quality is closer to a watch of around 5K. Very high quality Swiss automatic, even if their brand recognition is a little less

Post Photo
like

I know this is going to be unpopular but for right around $1k, I’m going with the Seiko SPB 317. It’s a re-issue (sort of) of a classic model. Can’t beat it

Post Photo
like

OP, if you want a bracelet the SPB143 is the watch. By far the nicest diver you can get at this price point.

I have a Longines hydroconquest and can tell you that it's very well built. The bracelet is about as thick as the case and it's about all I could ever ask for from a daily tool watch

like

Longines Hydroconquest is a nice watch, looks better with the black dial / black bezel IMO but good starting point for a collection.

like

How has tissot not been mentioned yet

like

They don’t look like a seamaster at all…

like

The symmetry of this watch is really thrown off due to the huge numbers on the dial and the tiny date window for me. And the crown guards are really big. Just my opinion wear what you like. Id still talk to you about watches and look at it

like

No need for sorry! The crown of the watch is the thing you twist to set the time and date. Crown guards are the two metal pieces sticking out around the crowns. These are commonly used in dive watches to protect the crown from getting knocked loose while under water

like

It’s good. That in black and automatic was my first nice Swiss watch. Look at the newer models on some of the grey dealer sites. Better movement and bracelet.
