While school districts may not pay for your degree (which seems kind of crazy to me that they ever would) every district that I have ever heard of should move you up the salary ladder if you get a Master’s degree.
NC eliminated master's pay some years ago. Only teachers grandfathered in, media specialists, and admins get paid for masters.
For me, my choice was determined by where my passion is and how it intersects with where I want to be in the future. I decided on M.ed in Leadership (principal track). I know, it’s probably cliched, but that’s where I eventually see myself. 😊
Think about this, do you want to teach the rest of your career? If yeah, pick what will make you better. You don’t exactly want to teach the rest of your career, pick a related field and go to grad school for that
Get a degree in your subject not in education. I am retiring to a professorship at a good university. This doesn’t happen in education because there are too many with the degree.
Since you’re high school, I would get a masters that will give you another endorsement. Job security
Side perspective - make sure you are going for the Masters because you want it, not for the pay increase. A lot of schools/districts no longer provide compensation for higher degrees
Every high school/ middle school I’ve worked in (all in CA) paid at least a $1000 stipend for my MA, some made it a requirement to reach the highest pay column/not just units
Also make sure the program you settle on is accepted in your state. NYS is VERY picky about where they will accept degrees from so be sure before you commit both money and time that it will be accepted
Not sure what you are thinking but special ed masters best thing I have every done gen ed or sped!!!
oh absolutely. I certainly had more support at WGU than I did at any brick and mortar school. I'll be an advocate for WGU for as long as I can.
I’m 57 and working on my second semester of my Masters. Someone said do it because you want to and not because you think you need to. Depending on what you teach and what you think you would like to teach or where you see yourself in five ten years should help you narrow your search somewhat. I settled on Spanish and eventually will do Social studies as well. Good luck either way!
You might look into National Board Certification as another route for professional development.
Go and make sure it’s a school that is accepted in your state
Grand Canyon University- got two Masters from there and enjoyed every minute of them.
Western Governors University is where I got my BA. I plan to go back in a year or two and get my masters. They offer a handful of programs for education
