I require students to read nightly, but working in an at-risk building many students did not have the support that they needed while at home (or their parents did not have time as they were earning money for food, etc.). If anyone became below in math, I talk with parents and suggest that they try to complete the homework for extra practice. I felt like I was wasting copy paper every month before doing this.
I don’t have students do homework. I will on occasion if students weren’t behaving and didn’t get it done but overall I feel like it’s a waste. A lot of my students need A LOT of practice with something before they understand it so to send stuff home, I always worry they’re going to practice incorrectly.
I’ve tried so hard to do this! I try to build in enough time in class for students to get their questions answered and then get finished. I also tried to incorporate “work days” where they work on anything they still need to finish. It hasn’t been working very well lately, to be honest, because we have so many standards and have to move so quickly.
