I couldn’t BF. Raising two formula babies. They’re doing great and I recovered my mental health. Fed is best. Mama matters, too.

like

No guilt! If it’s good for your mental health to get some time/your boobs back, that’s good for your baby too. I stopped when mar leave was over with both kids because I did not want to deal with pumping at work, and both times just felt like a fog was lifting, in a good way

like

Sending solidarity - you are doing great! Around 5 months of EBF I had my husband take the ~3a feed with formula while I slept through. Over the next few months I gradually dropped additional feeds until I was only nursing first thing in AM and before bed. The increase in sleep + freedom from being “on demand” did wonders for my mental (and overall) health!

like

Definitely quit! With my first did nine months and at the end I was like “what was the point of that.” There’s actually very little legit research behind all the supposed “benefits”… most are anecdotal at best. Second baby I did two months. Five months is huge. Enjoy that formula… so great to hand that baby off to dad, grandpa, etc and just kick back. Side note, if baby is five months, sleep train so no one needs to do night feeds.

like

You can always do it gradually to find what works for you too. Breastfeed morning, noon and night and then formula all the rest for a week and see if that feels good for everyone. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

like

Please give yourself a break and the baby bottles (have your husband do the night feedings). Your body needs to rest. As soon as I stoped BF, I was soooo happier! Seriously! So happy!!!

Same spot but I'm at three months. Breastfeeding has been fairly easy but it feels like a tether and I'm ready to have my body back. Let's do this -- all I hear about is how much better life will be in the other side.

like

I had to exclusively pump with my first and said I would go to six months. I was counting down the days at the end! Life WAS so much better on the other side. Even knowing that I’m struggling with guilt this time because it’s been “easy.” I want my body back too!

like

Both kids i went 5 months and definitely felt guilty since the physical breastfeeding was fine i just was so done with not owning my own body, with having so much more responsibility to baby, to not feeling free, to feeling so isolated…. Etc etc etc. It was SO FREEING both times to stop. Total game changing in enjoying motherhood more :)

I feel I wrote this. I loved breastfeeding and even found pumping very satisfying (seeing the volumes) - but I finally felt like myself again both times that I stopped. So so freeing. Yes it’s weird to “give up” all that good milk, but also… you’re a human again!!!

like

I never wanted to breastfeed. My first was born premature, so I tried pumping to help her any way I could. Pumping gave me instant panic attacks, so we stuck to bottles and formula. With the second I didn’t even try to BF. Both are happy and healthy, we still bonded, and my husband was able to help.

BCG1, I had D-MER too! Huge revelation when I discovered it.

Do it!! Do not feel guilty! You have done a lot already and mental relief you get from it is worth it. Your baby will be absolutely fine! Fed is best. There are many healthy geniuses who were formula-fed as a baby! 😀

Don’t feel guilty. 6 months was my goal for both kids and I was glad to switch them over to formula after that. Was nice to go back to wearing normal bras TBH

Best decision I ever made was to stop pumping when it was wearing on me and making it harder for me to show up as a parent. Healthy, sane parent is more important than breast milk at some point. ❤️

I stopped breastfeeding after about 2 weeks. I tried pumping but I felt my mental health taking a toll. It was all A LOT! He’s been on formula for about 8 months and it’s been great!

like

the trajectory of your baby’s life will be completely unaffected by whether or not you continue to breastfeed. *stopping* is not “quitting.” do what you want, no guilt. be a model taking care of yourself that your child can learn from!

like

You do you. Go for it!

Don’t feel guilty!!! Baby will be fine and you get your body back!

First off, 100% you do you. But… For what it’s worth, at this age baby’s desire for sleep overpowers their desire for food. I.e. even if they’re a little hungry, their body will keep them asleep. Night wakings probably more a function of naturally stirring between cycles and not knowing how to fall back asleep / having poor sleep associations. Just because they eat like a wild animal when they feed at 1am doesn’t mean that’s why they woke up. And feeding them every time only perpetuates that habit/association. So there is a world where you train them to fall asleep on their own (I recommend Ferber method) and you aren’t feeding all night. During the day you can feed whatever you can/want and supplement with formula for the rest. Just one option in case you aren’t bought into weaning completely.

Formula may also leave her fuller and more satisfied so she sleeps through the night. Feeding a hungry baby is not selfish! FWIW I lasted 5 weeks BF and supplementing, and once I switched to formula only the baby slept through every night. Coincidence? Hard to say
