Ohhh yes. This will be year 16, and I have been contemplating another career for the last 3yrs or so. BUT- it’s not because I’ve lost a love of teaching, rather the atmosphere of my school has really gone down the tubes. It’s a shame, really.

Ditto

I’m going into year 13. I have started to do work outside of teaching and it has really helped my motivation. I started a life coaching business for educators focused on burnout and inspiration. That allows me to work with teachers like you and me who don’t want to quit but need something more. And I’m also a yoga teacher. Each of these help me fill my soul and help me stand in front of my students excited to teach. Reach out if you would like to chat more!

I almost left teaching in 2012 when I realized that teaching is truly a gift that few can do and that I can. I used to compare my teaching style to the Pooh character Tigger. But Tigger sometimes stays hidden for weeks on end and the classes get harder and harder to face each day. Then I realized I had “lost my Tigger.” Every so often I have to look in the mirror and make an effort to “find my Tigger.” You have the gift. Find a way to motivate your “inner-Tigger,” for your own sake and the kids.

Yes!! This will be my 12th year. There are so many reasons I am not excited. But I agree the negative atmosphere of my school is to blame the most. Parents have also become so difficult to deal with and student behavior is obnoxious! Kids know our hands are tied and they push every limit they can and they get away with it. It is beyond frustrating!

Year 25. My wife had a massive stroke 8 yrs ago, and since that time I have battled it yearly. Find the good things about teaching and focus on that. Also Pick something new for you to focus on with your students. Be a learner in the process.

one of the best and worst parts about this career is the beginnings ng and ending of each year a true completion and rebirth. Every year is different, a new beginning & a box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get :-)

like

I very much agree with you

I will be in year 7 and I’m not excited but for different reasons. I’m moving out to be with my fiancé, I’m doing catering events almost every other weekend for extra money, and I started a grad course. Oh yeah, and I’m switching grade levels as well as classrooms. I haven’t started ANYTHING for my new curriculum. I should be freaking out, but I’m not. It’s not worth the tension headaches.

I am right there with you!! This will be my 16th year. I have 4-5 weeks left of vacation..... because one of this weeks will be spent unpacking and setting up a new classroom classroom for the 4th year in a row. I think I’m the same it’s the parents and everything else that make this job really hard nowadays. Sometimes I just want to walk away! It’s especially been hard on my husband and I as we struggle through the stress of infertility. I am definitely in a big funk lately. Hopefully we will find that spark again!

I believe that this is happening all over the country. We work so hard for our ( yes I said our) kids and then get told that we are not good enough. Teaching should be regarded as a noble profession, but instead they glorify and pay our athletes. If we were treated as they are they’re would be a lot less burnout and a lot more respect. This is year 25 and I am so ready for that 30 year mark. Good luck and hang in there- remember it’s for our kids!

By year 15, I was feeling the same way. I had an opportunity to change positions within my school, and that was a game changer for me. I’m not sure if that’s an option for you this school year, but maybe something to consider for next year

It happens....I like the grade levels I'm working with right now so I'm excited about going back!

I am also. Last year was a very hard year for me and seemed to take the wind out of my sails. I co-teach and the gen ed teacher who was hired was taken out of the classroom. He was awful, but I was left alone with 30 students, the sped teacher, not the teacher who specialized in the subject. Most students had IEPs or were at risk and they could not get a permanent sub. I had virtually no support when the kids went nuts. They were in crisis mode, I would call for backup and no one would come. We have 3 principals and others who could have come, but they didn’t. Burned me out and now I am having a hard time starting this new year with the right arttitude. I just dread the beginning of the year as that is when all this went down. The year ended fine, but it is still hard to get my mind in the right place

like

Struggling because of a lot of crazy things going on at our school. I am thinking that I’m not ready to begin again

like

This is my 34th year. In sped. I've had good years and and bad years. I just remember how much I love my students. I've learned to take the admin crap and let it slide off. It does help that I'm beat retirement

like

We were talking about this the other day, burnout usually occurs every 7 years....just like the so call marriage burn out.

like

This will be my 35th. I planned on retiring after this year but my husband has developed a serious health situation so it looks like I will be continuing...trying to stay positive and add new ideas to keep me motivated. I am also trying to find ways to make teaching easier on myself...teach Language Arts and Social Studies...

I changed positions at my school and it really seemed to help. I started going to new and different professional developments and found lots of new friends.

I'm looking for some kind of Japanese language classroom environment in the Santa Monica / West LA area. I've been self-learning via Duolingo and other apps for the past year, and I've hit a wall. No problems with reading hiragana/katakana, doing all right with kanji. I currently need classmates and an instructor to motivate me to memorize speaking phrases and practice active conversation. I know there are apps for this type of language exchange, but they're usually 1:1 matches and virtual.

Nothing is working. Mom and dad both say that this is the only place he does this at. He will go just fine outside of school. Suggestions?

Decision - I was out the door of my nationwide ins dfense firm. Was going to top local firm with a lot more clout where everything would be private pay and I’d be more on bigger exposure cases. However, my firm outmatched the new firm, made a much better bonus structure, and said I could do more work with their complex bus lit group. I’d still likely do about 50 percent ins defense but I really like the partners I work for, and I handle own cases/take depos, and get autonomy. Am I right to stay?
